Minor Details: Games of August 7

Byron Buxton makes his AAA debut.  Max Kepler and Kennys Vargas lead the Lookouts.  Thirteen runs for the Miracle.  Nick Gordon hits his first homer of the season.  Dereck Rodriguez continues to pitch well for the E-Twins.  The GCL Twins split a doubleheader.  Bad baserunning dooms a comeback by the DSL Twins.

CHARLOTTE 9, ROCHESTER 5 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Danny Santana was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching star:  Logan Darnell pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Matt Tuiasosopo was 3-for-4 with three home runs (his fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth) and seven RBIs.  Jason Coats was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Rob Brantly was 2-for-5 with two runs.

The game:  The Red Wings opened the game with three singles which led to two first inning runs.  It was all downhill after that.  Tuiasosopo hit a three-run homer in a four-run bottom of the first.  He hit another homer in the second to make it 5-2.  Reynaldo Rodriguez singled in a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Knights scored four in the seventh, three of them on another home run by Tuiasosopo.  The Red Wings put together four singles in the ninth to score twice but did not get the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  James Beresford was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Rodriguez was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Pat Dean pitched six innings and did all right other than when pitching to Tuiasosopo.  He gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 7, MOBILE 6 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his seventh), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, and two walks.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  J. T. Chargois struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Rudy Flores was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Gabriel Guerrero was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Jack Reinheimer was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a walk.

The game:  Reinheimer had a two-run homer in a three-run second that put the BayBears up 3-1.  A sacrifice fly made it 3-2 after two.  It stayed 3-2 until the sixth, when Kepler hit a three-run homer to give the Lookouts a 5-3 lead.  Polanco's two-run single made it 7-3 after seven.  The BayBears came back in the ninth, scoring three times and putting men on second and third with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-4.  D. J. Hicks was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3 with two walks.

FORT MYERS 13, PALM BEACH 5 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring three times and driving in three.  Aderlin Mejia was 4-for-6 with four RBIs.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Luke Westphal struck out five in 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.  Zach Jones struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Collin Radack was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Brett Wiley was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Tyler Melling struck out six in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  Garver homered in the second to put the Miracle on the board and five singles in the third produced three runs to give them a 4-0 lead.  It was 5-2 after five, but a three-run sixth made it 8-2 and put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-6 with a run and two RBIs.

BOWLING GREEN 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs.  Rafael P. Valera was 3-for-4 with a run.  T. J. White was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching star:  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Alec Sole was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Grant Kay was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Chris Pike pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Gordon hit a two-run homer in the third to tie it 2-2.  It stayed tied until the sixth, when two walks and four doubles produced five Hot Rods runs.  The Kernels got two in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it 7-5.  A single, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with none out for the Kernels in the ninth, but two strikeouts and a fly out ended the game.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Randy Rosario struck out five in 5.2 innings but gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk.

ELIZABETHTON 5, BLUEFIELD 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Dereck Rodriguez struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk.  Logan Lombana struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Anthony Mciver pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  D. J. McKnight was 2-for-4 with a double.  Rodrigo Orozco was 2-for-4.  Luis Sanchez struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.

The game:  It was scoreless until the sixth, when the Twins scored three times.  They added two in the eighth without a hit, getting three walks, two wild pitches, and an error.  The Blue Jays' biggest threat came in the sixth, when they put men on first and third with none out.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4.  Alex Perez was 1-for-4 with a run.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Blake Schmit was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Rich Condeelis struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.  Hector Lujan struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Luis Alejandro Basabe was 3-for-4 with two walks and a run.  Devon Fisher was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Anderson Espinoza struck out five in four shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

The game:  The Red Sox took the early lead, scoring once in the first and getting a two-run double from Fisher in the second to go ahead 3-0.  The Twins took advantage of three walks in the fifth, following them with two singles to tie it 3-3.  In the seventh, Diaz hit a two-out two-run homer to give the Twins a 5-3 lead.  The Red Sox put a man on second with one out but did not get the tying run on base.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Christian Cavaness was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Jose Martinez struck out five in four innings but gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk.

GCL RED SOX 2, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Luis Martinez was 1-for-1 with a double and two walks.  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-3.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Max Cordy struck out five in four innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Brandon Poulson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Roldani Baldwin was 2-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Isaias Lucena was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.  Roniel Raudes pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Tyler Hill singled in a run in the fourth, Baldwin homered in the sixth, and that was it.  The Twins put men on second and third with one out in the sixth and loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but were turned away both times.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a double.  Christian Cavaness was 0-for-2.  Kolton Kendrick was 0-for-3.

DSL ROCKIES 8, DSL TWINS 7 AT ROCKIES

Batting stars:  Francisco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jorge Parra was 4-for-4 with a double and a run.  Gorge Munoz was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitching star:  Jose Ramirez struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Jose G. Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring four times and driving in one.  Manuel Melendez was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Keinter Olivares pitched four shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  The Rockies got two in the first and two in the third to take a 4-0 lead.  The Twins got one in the sixth.  In the seventh, Hernandez hit a two-run double and scored on a pair of wild pitches to tie 4-4.  It was tied 5-5 going to the bottom of the eighth but the Rockies scored three times in that frame, with Rodriguez and Melendez contributing RBI singles.  With one out in the ninth Munoz hit a two-run double but was thrown out at third.  The next batter was retired to end the game.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-5.  Junior Amarante was 2-for-5 with a run.  Danny Feliz pitched three innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
