3. Justin Morneau was activated by the White Sox today. That didn't take long. When the Twins were in Chicago, he was still working out with the team and had not gone to the minors to get some at-bats yet. This season might be a lot like Kendrys Morales' time with the Twins for Morneau, although Kendrys didn't go to the minors at all.

4. Currently engaged in an argument (via email) about whether the infinite sum of the natural numbers is or is not -1/12.

   1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+...................... = -1/12

   I feel like I've really made it as a professor when I'm getting crackpot theories emailed to me.

   The argument goes like so. The infinite sum of alternating positive and negative 1 is evaluated to be 1/2. 1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+........... = 1/2. Justification for that is as follows: 1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+........... = S1 Then we evaluate 1-S1 and find that to be 1-(1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+...........) = 1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+........... = S1. So if 1-S1 = S1 then algebra tells us that S1 = 1/2. Then we look at the infinite series 1-2+3-4+5-6+7-8+.......... and find that it equals 1/4. S2 = 1-2+3-4+5-6+7-8+.......... We take two of those series and add them together 1+1-2-2+3+3-4-4+5+5-6-6+........... = 1+(1-2)+(-2+3)+(3-4)+(-4+5)+............. = 1-1+1-1+1-1 = S1 So 2*S2 = S1 = 1/2 and therefore S2=1/4 OK, so now we take the infinite sum of natural numbers and use these other things to show the final result. S3 = 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+...................... Take that and subtract S2 (1-2+3-4+5-6+7-8+..........) from it. 1-1+2-(-2)+3-3+4-(-4)+5-5+6-(-6)+..................... and you get 0+4+0+8+0+12+0+......... or 4+8+12+16 = 4*(1+2+3+4+5+................) = 4*S3 So S3-S2 = 4*S3 and S2 is 1/4. Algebra gives us S3 = 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+...................... = -1/12.

   Why it doesn't work. Because S1 doesn't equal 1/2. S1 is not a convergent series, so S1 does not have a value. The problem is in the algebra. 1-S1 does equal S1 that part is fine, but when you add S1 to both sides, what you're really doing is: (1-1+1-1+1-1+..............)+(1-1+1-1+1-1+...............) which equals 1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+....................... which is just S1, not 2*S1. So one potential value for S1 is 1 (there are others).

         as someone else said, what this video proves is that there is a function such that f(1+2+3+4+5+.....) = -1/12.

         But you just can't get there using actual mathematical principles.

6. Happy birthday, bS. I celebrated by changing to front rotors and pads on my car because they were walkedw/grooved like crazy. It went frighteningly well; everything came off easily and took less then two hours. I'm a little concerned.

   I was going to stain the deck this afternoon, but the stupid 20% chance of rain happened this morning.

7. Also, my oatmeal brown ale made it to the final round of the Hometown Brewdown competition. Final judging is tomorrow and I get a free ticket to the brew test for making it this far, if I can convince my wife to let me go. If it wins, it'll be commercially brewed by the Hop Garden, so that's potentially exciting.
