Game 70: White Sox vs. Twins
Its always nice to host the White Sox after a disastrous home series against a good team. Hopefully they can complete the sweep this afternoon because they head to Cleveland tomorrow with Boston right after that. It could get ugly, folks. The White Sox are pretty crappy, so they should have no problem today.
Jose Quintana (3-8, 5.07 ERA, 4.35 FIP) vs. Nik Turley (0-1, 12.46 ERA, 4.75 FIP).
Oh. Crap.
On the bright side, Turley's FIP is waaaaaaaay lower than his ERA, so maybe he's just been really unlucky in his first two starts? (also small sampe size). I'm not confident in that, so I'll go ahead and predict its going to require a good deal of runs today. Fortunately, Quintana hasn't been particularly good this year either. If you like good pitching, might want to cover your eyes for this one.
Appalachian League Preview
The Appalachian League starts its season tonight, so we thought we'd give you a quick preview.
There are ten teams in the Appalachian League. They are divided into two divisions, East and West. The teams take the names of their parent clubs. Our Elizabethton Twins play in the West. The other teams in their division are the Bristol Pirates, Greeneville Astros, Johnson City Cardinals, and Kingsport Mets.
The teams play a sixty-eight game schedule. Play starts tonight and will end August 31. The top two teams in each division reach the playoffs. The first place and second place team in each division play each other in a best-of-three series, with the second place team hosting the first game and the first place team hosting the next two (if necessary). The two winners then play each other in a best-of-three series.
The Twins play at Joe O'Brien Field. They are managed by Ray Smith, who is assisted by batting coach Jeff Reed and pitching coach Luis Ramirez. We could go through the roster, but it's not like there are a lot of recognizable names. If you want to look at it, you can find it at http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t576
Go Twins!
