File this one under Hairs, Wild. A few weeks ago I was feeling pretty pumped about the upcoming Call of Duty: WWII release with a PC version (the consoles were always for the kids, I mostly gamed on the computer). Then I thought, it sure would be cool to play my old WinXP games again, if only I had a spare computer laying around. Then I remembered that I have a spare computer laying around, a Thinkpad T61 (the 15.4" form factor and last of the true IBM models). Not only do I have the laptop, I have the advanced docking station for it, too. So I dragged it all out and booted it up and took stock of the configuration, and decided to upgrade. First I flashed the bios with the Middleton hacked version that unlocked some additional capabilities like SATA II. It also deletes the hardware whitelist so I can add newer components, including an upgrade from the Merom to the Penryn core CPU. I'm going from a Core 2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8GHz to a T9300 @ 2.5GHz chip (currently on a slow boat from Shenzhen). I had a spare Intel AC 7260 wifi adapter laying around so I'll stick that in there. I'm getting a new WUXGA LCD (1920x1200) since the current one is low res and a bit dark. Other new components going in include a 128 GB SSD HDD (and a 500 GB secondary HDD partitioned for XP and data storage), an Ultrabay adapter for the secondary hard drive, a Broadcomm Crystal HD video decoder card, and 8GB of Crucial RAM (the most expensive part, 4GB PC2-6400 @ 800MHz is a fairly rare animal). I also got a new screen bezel to replace the one I'm sure to break while replacing the screen. The advanced docking station is getting a 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card with VGA, DVI and HDMI outputs (big screen gaming FTW!) and an Ultrabay DVD/CDRW drive. I'm loading Windows 7 64-bit on the SSD and a slipstreamed, fully updated version of XP SP3 64-bit on the secondary drive. The current HDD is 160GB with Vista, so I'm also going to reformat that and load it up with an Ubunto distro so I can go Linux when I want to. I'll finish it off with a wireless media keyboard (pointing device TBD). Total cost of the upgrade = $300. The parts have been trickling in for week or so now and I can't wait to tear into this one, winter is coming.

Indeed, I've got two or three dozen good PC games from the goodle dayz I'm itching to play again. I got pretty unpumped after reading the system requirements for COD:WW2. I'm going to need a huge upgrade so I'm scouring craigslist for used gaming rigs that will fit the bill. Not finding much of anything below $300, coincidentally.
A lot of older games have open source clones/remakes that you can play them on modern systems (or non-Windows) and only need the original game for the assets.
Some real classics on that list.

I turned 40 last Wednesday, but I didn't throw a party.
I took the day off work and took some hikes and bike rides around the Coon Rapids Dam.

I used to go to the Coon Rapids Dam all the time on my bike. That's where my dad ran into Jesse Ventura's wife, literally. This was before his governor days. We were at a point where you had to walk your bike and he accidentally hit the ankle of a lady. After apologizing profusely he caught up to us. I saw the lady showing her hurt ankle to a big guy and I said, "Dad, that's Jesse "The Body" Ventura!" We quickly got out of there.
