Drive-By Truckers – What It Means
Since we have recently discussed the Drive-By Truckers, I'd figure I'd go with this one first. It is one of my favorites from the latest album. And I think their latest album is their best since Jason Isbell was in the band.
I like my protest music to tell stories and ask questions.
William Tyler – Highway Anxiety
This is not William Tyler's WGOM debut; last year Bootsy spun "Geography of Nowhere," a cut from Tyler's 2013 album Impossible Truth. He released his follow-up album, Modern Country, this June. Tyler wrote it in Oxford, Mississippi, and recorded it in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
For me the album evokes a contemporary perspective on Gram Parsons' Cosmic American Music, a genre that blurs country, folk, rock, soul, and bluegrass. Jazz is very much Tyler's addition to this mix – you can hear guitar greats Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and Bill Frisell in this track as much as Parsons' take on country-rock. Listen hard enough and you'll hear some Link Wray & Dick Dale, too.
Woody Guthrie – This Land Is Your Land
This land is our land, folks. Let's try to do something positive together.
John Prine – Flag Decal
Yeah, you get the gist.
Don McLean – American Pie
So today is today. Go out and perform your civic duty, and have a glass of rye. I'm going to have some whisky*.
*yes, this is the second time I've used this song, but today felt like a Don McLean kind of day.
Hello Saferide “Anna”
With Jill Johnson, on Jill's Veranda, Somewhere in Sweden, Late 2015/Early 2016
(Here billed as Annika Norlin, which probably is easier because she sings songs in English as "Hello Saferide" and in Swedish as "Säkert!", but as Säkert! did an album of English translations of her originally Swedish songs.)
So until I found this, I hadn't seen anything visual from Norlin worth sharing. This makes up for that and more. Fantastic performance, awesome song. If she's not up for more writing in English, an album of Americana self-covers a la Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's Sings Greatest Palace Music would be equally cool. She hasn't toured the US since I learned of her. Would I drive to Chicago if she did again that was the nearest show? Probably, and this video strengthens that.
Sturgill Simpson – Welcome To Earth (Pollywog)
Keeping on a country thread, I finally picked up the new Sturgill. Oh, man, the horns. Awesome. Here's the opening track:
2016
By the way, there was a very interesting (and funny) interview with homeboy here on WTF recently.
Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free
httpv://youtu.be/VvlTwSWyqUM
Here's the title track off of Something More Than Free, which has taken over Metamodern Sounds as the album I listen to probably too much, but I just can't help it. I'm still highly debating the concert in February. Bonus "Hudson Commodore" after the break. Continue reading Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free
