These seven early-twenty-somethings are part of the same South London scene that produced Black Midi, Squid, and yes, Dry Cleaning. It's virtually impossible to categorize their music, (other than avant-garde), as they mix such disparate elements as post punk, math rock, klezmer and free jazz among their influences. From their 2021 debut album For the First Time. I was gonna play "Black Sunglasses" --the first song of theirs I was introduced to--it's brilliant! Unfortunately, the lyrics to that one are decidedly NSFW. However, if you’re intrigued by “Opus”, you really need to check it out. As one witty You Tube commenter said of "singer"/guitarist Issac Wood, "I like my vocalists to sound like they're standing on a window sill yelling at a police negotiator." Perfect.

Yuko Uebayashi – Au Delà du Temps
I've started listening to a lot more classical music in the last year*, mainly by streaming MPR's classical station. By luck, I heard this flute piece by Yuko Uebayashi and was thoroughly hooked.
*It's interesting how technology can shape our listening habits. I had been working from home on my personal laptop since the pandemic hit, but the IT department was upgrading laptops, so I finally got one. It's a big improvement for doing work (larger screen, easier access to stuff on the server), but I don't have any sort of music streaming service on it, so my listening habits shifted accordingly.
Low – Days Like These
The new Low album was absolutely amazing. Quite the headphone album, although some of the (planned) distortion sounds like your headphones/speakers got blown out. It's interesting to think that while Low was playing this song, I was in a taxi on my nighttime trek to Aguas Calientes to see Machu Picchu.
Shannon And The Clams – Year Of The Spider

Porcupine Tree – Harridan
This track is too new -- no live performances on video yet. Gavin Harrison gives a real clinic on the drums here.
Harridon: "a strict, bossy, or belligerent old woman"
Cory Hanson – Paper Fog
Hey y'all. Another year, another best of! I was really, really struggling to find suitable videos for my post from my favorite album of the year (VAR! by Pony Hunt - seriously check it out!) or my most listened to artist (Curren$y), and settled on posting a song by Cory Hanson. Who was also my pick on the Summer Mix. But honestly, I keep coming back to this album. It's an excellent, weird listen. Which I guess is perfect for another weird year. Anyway, enjoy the song, check out the record, and stay safe. Hopefully concerts are a thing again for me soon, "lol!"
Turnstile – Blackout
My actual two favorite songs of the year ("Hardline" by Julien Baker and "4Runner" by Rostam) have already been played on the site, and impossibly, there does not exist any good live footage of "Great Mass of Color" by Deafheaven. So I'm going hardcore.
Glow On was a great album. Album opener "Mystery" lights a fuse, and "Blackout" comes along with the inevitable explosion.
Jon Batiste – I Need You
Let's see if I got this "Best Of" started off right...

AJR – Bummerland
Is this supposed to be new songs in 2020? Well, AJR was new to me this last year. I really like both their sound and their "not sure what I'm doing here" approach to lyrics and message. I played a bunch of their stuff as pandemic fatigue really started to hit in the fall. Great for quick car trips with the bass up a little when you have to get out of the house. And the kids like them.
They're three brothers who seem to be into the joyful production of their own music, so that's cool. They've been around a few years with a number of recognizable songs getting airtime, but are all over the place now with Bang! (But haven't been featured in WGOM Videos!) They don't have a ton of video choices, so the pick here is a little arbitrary. Some of my favorites include Weak, Netflix Trip, No Grass Today, Bud Like You, Three-Thirty, Burn the House Down, Call My Dad, Don't Throw Out My Legos, and Birthday Party. Enjoy!
