FMD 10-20-17: Five Favorite Songs Of The Millennium (So Far)

For my guest DJ week I'm playing covers, and I was entirely planning on something along those lines for FMD, but we've done that before, and today's song gave me a better idea: pick your five favorite songs of the millennium. I mean, it's an arbitrary point, but it seems less arbitrary than a lot of other points we could choose.

And yes, of course, the millennium started on January 1, 2001. So releases in the year 2000 are right out.

I've got 3 of mine so far:

Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe"
Rilo Kiley's "Portions For Foxes"
The Avett Brother's "Laundry Room"

I'm still working on the rest. Far too many candidates. This is tough.

FMD 9-8-17: When Do You Listen

Aquinas turns 8 on Sunday, and I realized that I have exceedingly little music from the past 8 years in my collection - much less than the 8 years before that. Before I had kids, I had time for music. I would seek out new stuff, try different things, discover, etc. I just have so little of that now. It's a big part of why my tastes haven't continued to grow.

Now, maybe once a week, I just plug in my headphones and take a whirl around youtube for a night, clicking on whatever mostly familiar starting point I pick, and going from there. I jump around a lot, but not a ton of new things pop up. (A side note: it seems like all the algorithms (and this is true for Pandora, et. al., too) keep redirecting me to the things I know, not the things I don't know.) It's not really a time for checking out new stuff, because it's my rare chance to ground myself. It's a time of re-centering and recharging, not discovering.

So I don't know when to find time for more new stuff. After the kids leave home, I suppose. Maybe I'll be able to count on them to introduce me to music someday. I put a lot of effort into giving them broad exposure to the music I know, so maybe their tastes will be diverse too, and someday that'll pay off.

Anyway, what are your listening habits? When do you listen? Do you mix in old and new together? Do you find specific time for discovery of the new?

FMD: To Listen List

I recently discovered a new artist. Just in the past few days. It's someone that I am absolutely loving. At the same time, I have to say that y'all have let me down. I don't think anyone on the WGOM has ever suggested I listen to Sturgill Simpson. The good news is that, despite the WGOM's silence, somehow he still creeped up to the top of my "To Listen List".

I'd heard some of his music here or there (well, I'm almost positive that it was never here) over the past few years, and I've always liked it, but never sat down and really gave it a listen until a few nights ago. Oh, I had long been meaning to, it just hadn't happened. Other things always took the place, and sometimes trying out new music just isn't what a person is in the mood for. So it sat for far too long. Maybe if someone here had recommended Simpson at any point I would have listened sooner...

Anyway, it turns out he's pretty good. Fantastic voice, excellent guitar work, creative (and somewhat seditious) lyrics... the whole works. You should check him out too.

And, in light of my recent discovery, I'm wondering what is at the top of your To Listen List? It seems like whenever there's something you know you should try, that doing so seems to pay off. At least that's been my experience. So what have you not gotten around to checking out that you've been meaning to for ages? What did you wait too long to try? And what should go to the top of my list, now that I've finally picked up Sturgill? (And, by the way, Sturgill should go to the top of your lists too... Maybe then we could all talk about him sometime?).

The Shakes – You Ain’t Alone

It is customary as WGOM vjays to play songs with live videos. Today, I am breaking that custom. You can give this video a lesser rating because of that. However, it is my duty to bring you terrific music. This is me doing so.

The Shakes are an unsigned band out of Alabama that have a lady singing Otis Redding tunes kind of vibe to them. This is their profile page on reverb nation. While they are not playing in the Twin Cities soon, nor do they have a record out for you to buy, I suggest keeping an eye on this group. This song is too good to go unnoticed.
