Parquet Courts “Almost Had to Start a Fight / In and Out of Patience”

I've not really been a huge Parquet Courts fan until this year. Wide Awake changed all that. Every song is just so... Energetic (and danceable, which Newbish appreciates).

Middle Kids – Edge of Town

Welcome to nibbish week!

We'll kick it off with a song that I've been enjoying this year from Australian band Middle Kids. I like this version, because there's a little bit longer of an ending.

The rest of the EP is solid, too - especially "The River", which I was initially going to post here, but this is the single, so there are far more videos available for it.

Friday Music Day: New Music

Having a kid hasn't slashed as much time from my hobbies as I might have expected so far (subject to change, obviously). I still play a fair number of video games, I will watch baseball, and I still listen to quite a bit of music.

The one thing I don't do nearly as much anymore is find NEW music. I almost always did that late at night after Linds went to sleep. Anymore, I'm just as tired as she is, so around the time I'd be perusing blogs and whatnot, I'm falling asleep on the couch, instead.

As a result, I haven't really heard a lot so far this year. The Operators album is pretty sweet, the new Mitski song is good. New M83 is deeply cheesy and odd....yeah.

Any recs?

Also, drop your ten.

Starflyer 59 – No New Kinda Story

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-d63s6ImM4

We'll close out with another old favorite. Starflyer 59 started out as a straight up shoegaze band in 1993, but they they've morphed album by album from a sort of dream pop band to more of a "normal" indie pop/rock act. The lead singer, Jason martin, is the only constant within the band, with other members usually only staying for an album or two..

This song catches them in their middle, more dreamy phase.

Thanks for watching this week!

The Haxan Cloak – Excavation

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ4JvOc2xps

So, you guys aren't huge into squeaky voiced dudes singing about stepping on trumpets? That's cool.

We're going to cheat a little today. This is definitely a live video, but it's essentially a DJ set. Plus, the video has a very prepared vibe, but that fits with the song, so it works. This was one of my favorites from last year. I like the cold, blue lighting of this video, and the haze that wafts over the whole thing.

Shout out to Brooks' dark techno playlist on Spotify, which I've been going through over the past couple days, and will continue to plumb the depths of in the near future.

Danielson – Did I Step on Your Trumpet?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxQ3kZRyTug

Danielson (or, rather, the act of listening to music by the Danielson Famile) can occasionally feel like a "weird for its own sake" thing. The dude sings in this weird, awkward, squeaky falsetto, and the lyrics often seem childish on the surface. He often wears a nine foot tall tree costume on stage. There's a lot of depth here, though.

Daniel sings Christian music, but his style is so... different that the mainstream Christian music market has pretty much entirely forsaken him (I recall back in the day, a Christian radio station I listened to called one of his songs the worst song they had ever heard). Then again, Sufjan Stevens has been an on again, off again member of the collective for a long time now, so I guess he must be doing something right.

He was the subject of an occasionally interesting documentary a few years ago, appropriately called Danielson: A Family Movie.

I am expecting divisive opinions regarding this song.
