2022 Game Log 109 – Twins at Dodgers

Another Tuesday another 2-game midweek series against an NL team. This time it's the Dodgers who are a MLB high 42 games over .500 after sweeping the Padres this past weekend. Julio Urias up for the Dodgers with his gaudy .99 WHIP, ERA under 3.00 and nearly a strikeout per inning. Joe Ryan for the Twins. Which Joe Ryan will be get? The guy who at times has been lights out or the one who gives up bombas at an unsustainable rate? Let's hope it's the former.

It's the start of a California road trip so get used to late starts. This one is at 9:10p.

Twins Lineup
DH - Buxton
SS - Correa
2B - Polanco
1B - Miranda
3B - Urshela
CF - Celestino

2022 Game Log 103 – Tigers at Twins

Nothing like playing the Tigers to cure what ails you so Twins are hoping to add to their victory total as we head into the dog days of summer. Matt Manning on for the Tigers and it's his first start back after being on the 60-day DL for shoulder problems. I'm guessing he's on a pitch count so hopefully the Twins can get lots of bats against that bullpen. Chris Archer on for the Twins after having his start moved back a day, perhaps the extra rest will get him to pitch into the 6th inning.

I usually write these in the morning so no word on trades but by game time we will know if the Twins upgraded their roster at all for this 60-game stretch run. (Narrator: They did in fact upgrade their roster).

Looks hot and sunny for a 6:40p first pitch.

Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile – Both Sides Now

This past Sunday, Joni Mitchell surprised everyone by showing up at the Newport Jazz Festival and sang a number of songs with Brandi Carlile. Given that she's 78 and hasn't performed live in years (due to an anerysm in 2015), it was quite the moment. The emotional highlight was Both Sides Now and you can see Brandi Carlile wiping the tears from her face multiple times in this nicely shot vid.

2022 Game Log 97 – Twins at Brewers

Another 2 game mid-week series against the Brewers. This time in Beer Town. Miller Park lost it's moniker and is now named after an an insurance company, which did nothing for it's toilet-like bowl interior. At least there's a roof on it for the 5 games a year that may be impacted by rain.

Dylan Bundy on the mound tonight and he's done well lately, especially since the Twins have scored 6 runs in each of his last 3 games -- that will also be a big help for the ol' win-loss record. Rookie Ethan Small for the Brewers in his first outing in two months. Hopefully Twins bats can get to him early as the Brewers bullpen is typically lights out.

Miguel Sano back in the line up playing tonight (at the expense of Arraez?). With the trade deadline a week away, could be an interesting few games for the Twins.

Game time at 7:10.

Twins Lineup
CF - Buxton
SS - Correa
2B - Polanco
LF - Garlick
DH - Miranda
3B - Urshela
RF - Kirilloff
C - Sanchez
1B - Sano

2022 Game Log 89 – Brewers at Twins

First, I get to make my annual rant on why does MLB insist on scheduling two rivals, who don't play each other much, for a two-game series in the middle of the week? The Twins and Brewers should be playing a weekend 3-game series so that fans can make road trips, stay at their cousin's house, and talk smack with their regional brethren about their state, baseball team, Packers, whatever. Believe me MLB you will make more money that way than by trying to sell ugly 4th of July caps!

Whew! O.k. I feel better. Milwaukee Brewers in town and much like the Twins, they are atop the Central Division with a decent record but come playoff time probably doesn't have a shot against a team like the Dodgers (Yankees, Astros). Jason Alexander, who recently had a bit role in the last season of the Marvelous Mr. Maisal, on the mound for the Brewers. He's a 29-year old rookie who's put up ok numbers but will probably end up as #4 or #5 pitcher or most likely a bullpen guy.

Josh Winder, another rookie, on the mound for the Twins and he's pitched well his last two games, although it's nice when your team puts up 6 and 8 runs.

Game time 6:40 and looks to be a gorgeous night for baseball. Let's go Twins!

Twins Line Up
DH - Arraez
SS - Correa
CF - Buxton

FMD – Shoegaze

During the pandemic, when I had lots of time by myself, I listened to a bunch of shoegaze bands. It just seemed like a good soundtrack to being sheltered at home and all the crap happening in the outside world. Of course most of that was the shoegaze classics like My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Slowdive, Ride, etc...

One nice things about streaming services (I prefer Apple Music to Spotify, which itself is another FMD topic) is that they will offer up other albums based on what you are listening to and I've been introduced to a lot more shoegazey bands that I missed when they originally came out. Two such bands and albums are Chapterhouse's Whirlpool and Mercury Rev's Yerself is Steam, both of which came out in 1991 so kind of right when bands like Ride, MBV, etc were starting out.

Yerself is Steam
is a lot more aggressive with screaming guitars and overall weirdness. It's an acquired taste but the opening song Chasing a Bee is 7 minutes of get your guitar freak on bliss.

Whirlpool is an album that I can't stop listening to. It would be what most would consider a "classic shoegaze album" with soaring guitars, pop sensibilities, and dreamy vocals. One can hear snippets of Smashing Pumpkins' Gish, Lush, Ride, Swervedriver, and there's one song that could easily fit into Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation album. Some of these bands aren't really influences as they postdate or are happening at literally the same time as Chapterhouse is recording. It's a wonder to me why this album isn't more well known and beloved.

Anyway if interested in this type of music, definitely check out these two albums, especially Whirlpool.

Do you have any other albums of a similar vein that I should be checking out?

2022 Game Log 84 – Twins at Whities

Twins back at it at the Rate against the stumbling White Sox. It would be nice to keep the boot on Chicago's neck so that they go away quietly this summer, but not so bad that TLR get's fired. It's a fine line to hew.

Chris Archer back up for the Twins and while he rarely if ever gets past the 6th inning, he's been a decent back of the order guy. I just wish the Twins had more front of the order guys in their pitching stable. Kopech on deck for the White Sox and although his win/loss record doesn't reflect it, he's been decent this year with nearly a strikeout an inning and a 1.03 WHIP.

Apparently Josh Winder will be starting. Chris Archer has been scratched. I may add more here if I find out the reason./

First Pitch at 7:10, but it looks like nasty weather heading toward Chicago. This game may be delayed or postponed.
