F%#*&! Up – Turn The Season
As a rule, I try to stay away from bands with the F word in the name. As another rule, I tend to shy away from bands whose singer only wears boxer briefs and sneakers on stage for a majority of the show. Furthermore, I usually don't care for bands who have singers that sound like crappy hardcore singers. For some reason though, man, I really dig this tune.
As you would imagine, this song is in no way appropriate for work. Also, the sound quality isn't perfect. Not that would would expect it to be. NXNW, 2011.

On July 10th, the Twins had just taken the third of four games from the South Siders and were heading home for an extended homestand, following the All-Star game break. We were excited. The club had managed to trim nine games from its division deficit (which had peaked on May 23 at 15.5). And we were going home to beat up on the Landed Gentlemen, then face down our two biggest division threats of Cleveland and Detroit. The team had its fate in its hands.
Four games against KC added to the excitement, as our boys took three of four, for their fifth straight series win. They were now within five games of the top of the division and facing division-leading Cleveland. Time to make our move? Meh. Two losses, followed by two wins. Water treaded.
Hey, division-leading Detroit is next. We lost three of four. Something was telling us that this was not our year. A 4-6 West Coast trip didn't help our moods, but at least we were going home to beat up on the ChiSox again. I mean, we own these guys, right?
Three. Game. Sweep. Series over, season over.
All we have left now is our shattered pride and a shot at some Schadenfreude. The Sox are a half-game above .500 (a place the Twins have never been this season) and six games back of Detroit -- close enough that they seem to think they've got a shot. Minny plays seven games against the Sox in the next 10 days. All I ask is that we shatter some dreams the next week and a half, boys. The word for the day, again, is Schadenfreude.

Manchester United and City have combined for 25 goals in three games to open the season, including 8 and 5 yesterday, respectively. By my calculation, that's more than ⅓rd of all goals scored this year (72 total). Edin Dzeko (City) is leading the league with 6 goals, and Rooney is right on his heels with 5. They would be tied for 4th (Liverpool) and 5th (Chelsea) in the table, respectively, by goals scored.
Meanwhile, at the opposite end of things, Swansea City is still looking for their first ever Premier League goal. In spite of this, they are still 15th in the table thanks to two 0-0 draws.

Buffalo 3, Rochester 1 in Buffalo. The Bisons scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth. Brandon Roberts and Chase Lambin each had two hits. Deinys Suarez gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings. Carlos Gutierrez struck out two in a perfect eighth.
New Britain. No game scheduled. The Rock Cats lead Reading by a half game for the last playoff spot.
Charlotte 7, Ft. Myers 0 in Ft. Myers. The Stone Crabs scored four in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead. Nick Romero had two doubles. Starter Alex Wimmers went 6.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks.
Clinton 5, Beloit 2 in Clinton. The LumberKings scored three in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. Lance Ray hit a home run, his fifteenth. Manuel Soliman took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings.
Elizabethton 8, Princeton 2 in Elizabethton. The Twins scored three in the third and three in the fourth. Eddie Rosario singled, tripled, and homered, driving in three and raising his average to .330. The home run was his twentieth. Tyler Koelling had three hits. Matthew Koch singled and doubled. Tim Atherton worked six shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks. Cesar Ciurcina was credited with a save despite allowing two runs three hits and a walk in three innings. He did strike out four. The win clinches a playoff spot for Elizabethton. The regular season ends tomorrow.
August 29, 2011: Opportunity

Sunday Dinner. Pork’d again.
Okay, yeah I know, I know, the pig again. What can I say? Today's recipe once again comes from Mr. Bittman's How to Cook Everything. I'm grilling up a curry mustard pork loin with a little smoke added in for kicks. When I first pushed on CarterHayes to post his mustard recipe it wasn't for this dish, but in hindsight I think that some homemade mustard would have been better than the Dijon I used. Mr. Bittman suggests that the pork loin isn't the most flavorful cut you can get, but I respectfully disagree. Yes, the tenderloin is less fatty and prone to burning, but if you keep your eyes on the prize this cut will hold it's own against any of the more 'porky' selections. This is one of the simplest recipes in Bittman's book, and I'm looking forward to having leftovers, you'll need:
A pork loin roast (I went with a tenderloin two pack about 2 1/4 lbs worth)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (or some of the good homemade stuff)
2 tablespoons Hot Curry powder
salt and black pepper to taste
a beer to drink while you're grilling
Mix the dijon, curry powder, salt and pepper in a small bowl. This should end up being a pretty thick paste. Rub this paste all over the meat anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours before you grill. Fire up the grill, open a bottle of whatever beer you have on hand. I suggest a Torpedo or Silver Anniversary Ale because the spicy hoppiness should pair pretty well with the nostril singeing spicy pork. If you're planning on smoking this roast, soak a handful of apple, or other hardwood, chips in water for 30 minutes to an hour before you grill. Keep the charcoal off to one side as you'll want to sear the meat over high heat, and then move to a cool spot for indirect grilling / smoking. Keep a close eye on these as they cook, you'll want to remove the tenderloin from the grill when you reach an internal temperature of 150˚ to 155˚. Cover with foil and let rest 10 minutes before you slice thin. Serve with starch and vegetable of your choice. I'm going with smashed yellow potatoes, sauteed green beans, and a small green leaf salad.
