Twins at Comiskey Park. 7pm

After a sweep of the Royals at home, the Twins head east to play the White Sox. The Sox  got a new sponsor name for their stadium but I don't recall what it is so I will call it Comiskey Park.

The Sox had a rain out and sit at 1-1 on the season. Twins are tied for first with a 3-0 record.Phil Hughes toes the rubber for the visitors while newcomer Derek Holland starts for the Pale Hose.

Weather should not be a problem, with cloudy and cool tonight and a warmup in Chicago for the weekend.

  1. Rough start for ex-Twin Francisco Liriano tonight. Faced eight batters, retired only one. One-third of an inning, four walks, three hits, five runs.

  2. Le Menu at Chez Hayes tonight: leftover Italian beef pot pie with a side of grilled cheese. I may treat myself to my last one of these later. Or I might just have a Brandy Old Fashioned (Sour).

    1. I grilled a pre-marinated pork tenderloin (it was a last minute decision) and some asparagus. Swung by woodmans and ended up with a decision between various new Sierra Nevadas. I ended up going with the Tropical Torpedo, which is excellent. #freebait

    1. Yes.

He ran a long way straight back to the wall to get to that one. It wasn't home run robbing, but it was pretty awesome.

  3. I do not want to hear criticism of Sano if he makes mistakes playing first base. It's not his fault the Twins are playing him out of position.

    1. Provus says Sanó is wearing Mauer's mitt because he doesn't have a first baseman's mitt of his own.

    2. Dick didn't say anything other than it was his first career start at first base, so at least there isn't any company line there.

  4. Has Buxton been taking lessons from Dazzle on losing his cap on plays in the outfield?

  5. If Buxton strikes out every time up tonight, it's still worth having him out there. The Twins might already be out of the game if they'd had anyone else in center field.

  6. If I were Falvey & Levine I would have someone start compiling a Buxton/Kepler/Rosario highlight reel for use in luring free agent starters.

    Or Shohei Otani.

  7. What's the Nation's opinion on the matte batting helmet trend? I think it looks pretty good for some teams (Dodgers, Pirates, Giants, Rockies) and pretty meh/out of place on others (Mariners, Rangers, Marlins). If the Padres wore still brown I think a matte brown helmet would look really sharp, but their matte blue doesn't do anything for me. I can't imagine the Cardinals without a glossy red helmet.

    1. I haven't really paid much attention, but looking at the white Sox is day or does not work if a guy is wearing any black sleeves showing, because the cloth is too dark.

    2. I saw it on the Yankees helmet on Opening Day. I was not a fan because the colors did not match.
I think overall I like the glossy helmet.

  8. Anyone care to fact check dick'a assertion that a properly laid bunt, more often than not, leads to multiple runs? Because I think he's full of it.

    1. I don't have time to fact-check it, but it's absurd on its face. Bunting is not a big-inning strategy, it's one-run or two-run strategy. It's giving up an out to move one or, sometimes, two runners into scoring position. Even if multiple runs eventually score, it's not the bunt that caused them, it's a bunch of hits that came after the bunt.

The problem, of course, is that a lot of Twins fans believe Bremer when he talks out of his backside like that.

      1. That's why I've no desire to look into it. It's just such an absurd statement to make. The frustrating part is that he'll never be called out on this sort of thing.

  9. Nice of the Twins and Tigers to schedule day games during Holy Week so I might have a chance to listen to some of them.

      1. I've got no problem with a guy not going all out on a play a major leaguer makes like 95% of the time.

        1. It's a chilly night. Sanó's hammies can stay unpulled as far as I'm concerned.

          1. Werd. He's in a contract year, and I'm cynical enough these days that I could see the twins trying to reduce his value.

  10. Dick says Peanut M&Ms are one of his three weaknesses, and that he won't share the other two, but that Bert knows one of them. Bert laughs.

  11. Time for the twins to be relegated to the smaller screen. I got The Raid and The Raid 2 for less than $15 total. (Also got Dredd for less than $6, so if I wanted to, I could have am awesome night.

  12. Dang, this is a good beer. I should probably see about picking up a few for the larder.

  13. It's pretty cool to have outfielders who can actually cover some ground and catch the ball.

    1. That "almost" is the difference between oft-winning teams and oft-losing, it seems.

    1. He's been that way since Game 1, and not just with Buxton. Not that I want him to pretend things aren't what they are, but it's like he's actively looking for things to criticize.

  14. If Falvey/Levine are as "good" as we hope, then I can't wait for them to flip Kintzler for some actual prospects in about a month.

  15. During this game, I went to my mom's so we could hang out for national beer day, I troubleshot their audio issues, I moderated a few games of Twister between the Milklings and I got my finger smashed in a door by Sour Cream, entirely by accident. It's been an eventful few hours.

Somehow, I've still seen the majority of this. Let's finish the thing.

Also, Todd Frazier: .000 AVG?! I'm guessing he hasn't made all those Buxton-level plays, either.

    1. The Twins have scored 24 runs this season. 15 of them have come in the seventh inning.

  16. This game is a good example of how important defense is. Stats will show Hughes pitched well. I would not agree. The best thing he did was not walk anyone, which I think is underappreciated. He should be taking the OFers out for steak dinners tonight.
