Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-one

JALISCO 12, MAZATLAN 10 IN JALISCO

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 4-for-5 with a grand slam.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, a double, and two runs.  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a home run, his third.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 1-for-5 with a home run, his third.

Pitching star:  Fernando Burguena struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Henry Urrutia was 3-for-5.  Manny Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Julian Ornelas was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Agustin Murillo was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Daniel Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Amadeo Zazueta was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The game:  It was a game of big innings.  Jalisco started it with five in the second.  With one out Alvarez reached on an error and Murillo walked.  Ornelas had an RBI single, Santiago Chavez had a run-scoring double, an error scored two runs, and Rodriguez hit an RBi double, making it 5-0 Jalisco.

That lead lasted until the fourth, when Mazatlan scored six.  Anthony Giansanti singled, but was still on first with two out.  But then Figueroa singled, Hector Mora had a run-scoring single, Maxwell Leon walked to load the bases, Ramon Rios walked to force in a run, and Paredes hit a grand slam, giving Mazatlan a 6-5 lead.  It went to 8-5 in the fifth on solo homers by Alvarez and Valenzuela.

But in the bottom of the fifth Jalisco went ahead to stay.  With one out Rodriguez singled and scored on Japhet Amador's single-plus-error.  Urrutia singled to put men on first and second, Alvarez had a run-scoring double, Murillo and Ornelas had RBI singles, Santiago Chavez walked to fill the bases, and Zazueta had a two-run single.  It was 11-8 Jalisco.

Mazatlan got back into it in the seventh when Giansanti walked and Figueroa hit a two-run homer, making it 11-10.  But that was as close as Mazatlan would get.  They put two on in the eighth, but a double play took them out of the inning.  Jalisco got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Rodriguez walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an Alvarez single.  Mazatlan went down in order in the ninth.

WP:  Daniel Guerrero (1-0).  LP:  Marco Antonio Duarte (0-1).  S:  Brennan Bernardino (2).

Notes:  Figueroa is batting .500.  Paredes is batting .389.  Italo Mota was 0-for-1 and is batting .357.  Munoz is batting .325.

Francisco Rios started and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out none.  Burgueno has an ERA of 2.16.

Orlando Lara started for Jalisco.  He pitched four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks and striking out one.

Record:  Mazatlan is 7-14, in tenth (last) place, 9.5 games behind Obregon.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again playing at Jalisco tonight.

Ezra Furman – Restless Year

How have we never had an Ezra Furman song played in this joint? It's probably because his live stuff isn't nearly as good as his studio stuff. Looking around, I think this is an artist who absolutely needs the studio. But I enjoy a ton of his songs - he uses his voice in really creative, emotive ways. Plus he always seems to nail the use of the sax.

Anyway, here's a fun song with a reference to Dostoevsky, who I enjoy reading, so... enjoy!

2003 Rewind: Game Forty-nine

MINNESOTA 3, SEATTLE 1 IN SEATTLE

Date:  Sunday, May 25.

Batting stars:  Torii Hunter was 2-for-2 with two walks.  A. J. Pierzynski was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.  Chris Gomez was 2-for-4.  Dustan Mohr was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fifth) and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Rick Reed pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks and striking out one.  LaTroy Hawkins pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Eddie Guardado pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Franklin pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and four walks and striking out four.  Bret Boone was 2-for-4 with a home run (his twelfth) and a double.

The game:  Jacque Jones led off the game with a walk.  Corey Koskie drew a one-out walk, and Bobby Kielty singled to put the Twins up 1-0.  Mohr homered leading off the second to make it 2-0.

The Mariners had only three hits, all singles, through the first six innings and never got a man past first.  That changed in the seventh, when Boone led off with a home run to cut the Twins lead to 2-1.  The Twins got the run back in the eighth when Kielty singled, went to third on a stolen base-plus-passed ball, and scored on Hunter's single.

Seattle got a one-out double by Boone in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate.  A pair of fly outs ended the game.

WP:  Reed (3-5).  LP:  Ryan Franklin (3-3).  S:  Guardado (13).

Notes:  Todd Sears was at first base in place of Doug Mientkiewicz.  Mientkiewicz came in for defense in the eighth.  Gomez was at second in place of Luis Rivas.  Kielty was the DH.

Jones was 1-for-4 with a walk and was batting .343.  Mohr was batting .318.  Gomez raised his average to .313.

Hawkins lowered his ERA to 1.19.  Guardado lowered his ERA to 1.74.

This was the first of three stolen bases for Pierzynski in 2003.  Three was his career high, equalled in 2010.  For his career he had 15 stolen bases and was caught stealing 23 times.  I'm no sabremetrician, but I don't think that's a very good percentage.

I know Chris Gomez was a member of the Twins, but I don't have any actual memory of his time with the team.  Does anyone remember, were we excited about him at this point, when he was batting over .300?  Were we thinking he should replace Rivas at second base?  Or did we think that it was just a small sample size fluke, which it turned out to be?  I have no idea.

In his last three starts, Reed had pitched 22 innings and given up 4 runs on 19 hits and 3 walks.  He had lowered his ERA from 5.87 to 4.10.

Sears was sent back to AAA after this game.  He was batting .278/.365/.426, so it wasn't terribly fair, but Mientkiewicz was ready to resume regular duties at first base and there simply wasn't a spot for him.  He would come back for a couple of weeks in late July/early August, but then would be traded to San Diego for Alex Garcia, a middle infielder who couldn't hit.  He spent one year in Class A Quad Cities, then played two years of independent ball.

I don't remember Bret Boone as a slugger, but already hit his twelfth  home run of the season in this game.  He would hit 35 on the season.  He went through 2000, his age thirty-one season, only having hit 20 homers twice (24 in 1998, 20 in 1999).  Then, in his early-to-mid thirties, he hit 37, 24, 35, and 24 home runs.  A suspicious person might wonder if he had some help, although it should be pointed out that I'm aware of no evidence to support that suspicion.

The Twins had won four of five, seven of nine, nine of twelve, and fifteen of twenty, and nineteen of twenty-five.

Record:  The Twins were 29-20, in first place in the American League Central, 2.5 games ahead of Kansas City.

Gigantes Recap: Game Three

GIGANTES 9, AGUILAS 8 AT GIGANTES (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jose Siri was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Abiatal Avelino was 2-for-5 with two walks and two RBIs.  Carlos Peguero was 2-for-5 with a walk.  Oneil Cruz was 2-for-5.  Richard Urena was 2-for-6 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Tiago Da Silva struck out three in three innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit and one walk.  Carlos Ramirez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.  Domingo Tapia struck out two in a perfect inning.  Ramon Ramirez pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up a hit and two walks.  He struck out one.  Wily Peralta pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.  Yerry De Los Santos struck out all three men he faced.

Opposition stars:  Victor Robles was 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.  John Nogowski was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.  Deivy Grullon was 2-for-4.  Wilmer Difo was 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Juan Lagares was 2-for-6.

The game:  Robles homered leading off the game to put Aguilas up 1-0.  The Gigantes took the lead with two in the bottom of the first.  Siri doubled and a pair of walks loaded the bases.  Juan Francisco then delivered a two-run single to make it 2-1 Gigantes.

It went to 4-1 in the second.  Siri walked and scored on an error which sent Ronald Guzman all the way to third.  A wild pitch scored Guzman.  Aguilas got back into it in the third.  Edmundo Sosa doubled and scored on a two-out single-plus-error by Lagares.  Melky Cabrera then delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3.  Aguilas tied it in the fourth.  Difo doubled, went to third on Grullon's single, and scored on a double play.

The Gigantes took the lead back in the fifth.  With one out Peguero and Urena singled and a hit batsman loaded the bases.  Curz and Siri each had an RBI single to make it 6-4 Gigantes.  Each team scored once in the seventh, bringing the score to 7-5.

Aguilas went back in front in the eighth.  Singles by Rodriguez, Difo, and Grullon loaded the bases.  With one out Robles had an RBI single and Nogowski had a two-run single, making the score 8-6 Aguilas.  The first two Gigantes were retired in the ninth, but Gilberto Celestino singled, Ronald Guzman walked, and Avelino delivered a game-tying single to send the game to extra innings.

There was no scoring in the tenth or eleventh.  In the twelfth we started the "man on second" rule.  It did Aguilas no good, as all three of their batters struck out.  An intentional walk started the bottom of the inning.  A bunt/fielder's choice loaded the bases.  Peguero then hit a sacrifice fly to end the game.

WP:  De Los Santos (1-0).  LP:  Jose Adames (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Avelino is batting .556.  Siri is batting .462.  Peguero is batting .364.  Celestino and Webster Rivas are each batting .333.  Guzman is batting .308.  Urena is batting .300.

The teams combined to use twenty-one pitchers.  Aguilas used twelve and the Gigantes used nine.  I still don't know for sure if there's a three-batter minimum, but there may be, because the only pitcher to face fewer than three batters did so to end the inning.

The Gigantes have gone to extra innings in each of the last three games.  I don't know what the major league record is, but three seems like it has to be pretty close.

The Gigantes again had a ton of scoring chances, going 5-for-18 with men in scoring position.  They stranded 18.

Record:  The Gigantes are 2-1, tied for second with the Tigres del Licey.  The Toros del Este are in first place, but due to rainouts have only played one game.  They are, of course, 1-0.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Escogido tonight.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty

JALISCO 4, MAZATLAN 3 IN JALISCO

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks and striking out four.  Juan Ramon Noriega gave up an unearned run on no hits and one walk.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Luis Ivan Rodriguez pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk and striking out six.  Agustin Murillo was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brennan Bernardino struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

The game:  Mazatlan started the scoring in the third when Edson Garcia doubled and scored on a single by Jose Augusto Figueroa.  Jalisco came right back with three in the bottom of the third.  Doubles by Murillo and Julian Ornelas put men on second and third.  Alan Espinoza doubled them both home to put Jalisco in front and a Manny Rodriguez single made it 3-1 Jalisco.

It stayed 3-1 until the seventh, when Jalisco scored again.  Ornelas walked and stole second.  He went to third on an error and scored on a ground out, making it 4-1.

Mazatlan got back into it in the eighth.  Figueroa drew a one-out walk and Ramon Rios singled.  Isaac Paredeas had an RBI single to make it 4-2.  With two out Ricky Alvarez delivered an RBI single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.  The score was 4-3, but the threat was over.  Mazatlan got a one-out walk in the ninth but did not advance the man past first base.

WP:  Rodriguez (3-0).  LP:  Torres (1-2).  S:  Bernardino (1).

Notes:  This was the first game for Mazatlan in a week and a half, as the league took a COVID-related pause.

Figueroa was 1-for-3 and is batting .478.  Italo Mota was used as a pinch-runner and is batting .385.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .315.

Noriega has an ERA of zero.  Espinosa's ERA is 1.59.

The game-time temperature was 73.  Today's high where I live is predicted to be 64.  Let's play ball!

Record:  Mazatlan is 7-13, in ninth place, 9.5 games behind Obregon.  My understanding is that eight teams make the playoffs, although I could be wrong about that.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again at Jalisco tonight.

2003 Rewind: Game Forty-eight

MINNESOTA 7, SEATTLE 2 IN SEATTLE

Date:  Saturday, May 24.

Batting stars:  A. J. Pierzynski was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer (his fourth) and two runs.  Chris Gomez was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double.  Jacque Jones was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Corey Koskie was 1-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk.

Pitching star:  Kyle Lohse pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk and striking out seven.  He threw 114 pitches.

Opposition stars:  Ichiro Suzuki was 2-for-4.  Julio Mateo struck out four in four innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits and two walks.

The game:  The Twins put men on first and second with one out in the first but did not score.  In the second, however, Todd Sears walked, Dustan Mohr singled, and Pierzynski hit a three-run homer.  They got a pair of singles, putting men on first and second with one out, but could do no further damage.  Still, it was 3-0 Twins after two.

Each team scored once in the fourth.  Gomez hit a one-out triple and scored on a two-out single by Matthew LeCroy.  The Mariners got the run back on singles by Suzuki, Bret Boone, and John Olerud, making the score 4-1.

Each team again scored in the fifth.  The Twins got two in the top of the inning.  With two out, Pierzynski and Luis Rivas singled and Jones hit a two-run double.  Seattle scored once in the bottom of the inning when Randy Winn doubled and Suzuki delivered a two-out RBI single, bringing the score to 6-2.

Koskie led off the sixth with a home run to make it 7-2.  And that was it.  The Mariners only got one more hit, a two-out single by Carlos Guillen in the eighth.

WP:  Lohse (4-3).  LP:  Joel Piniero (4-4).  S:  None.

Notes:  Sears was at first base in place of Doug Mientkiewicz.  Mientkiewicz came in for defense in the ninth.  Gomez was at short in place of Cristian Guzman.

Jones raised his average to .345.  Mohr was batting .317.  LeCroy was 1-for-5 and was batting .313.  Gomez raised his average to .300.

Lohse lowered his ERA to 3.06.  This was one of two complete games he had in 2003, with the other coming May 8.  It was his third-highest game score of the season, behind the May 8 game and his eight shutout innings in his first start.  It is very unlikely that he would've been allowed to complete a game like this today.

Gomez was a home run away from the cycle.

I have no particular memory of Julio Mateo, but he spent six years in the Seattle bullpen.  In two of those years he was really good:  2003, when he went 4-0, 3.15, 0.96 WHIP with 71 strikeouts in 85.2 innings; and 2005, when he was 3-6, 30.6, 1.09 WHIP with 52 strikeouts in 88.1 innings.  For his career he was 18-12, 3.68, 1.20 WHIP.  He walked only 2.4 per nine innings.  He was never a closer, and in fact had only two career saves.  But he was a solid reliever for much of the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Record:  The Twins were 28-20, in first place in the American League Central, 1.5 games ahead of Kansas City.

The Regrettes – Hey Now

Man I dig me some indie-pop/riot grrrl/garage punk stuff. I know that's a lot of categories, but I think this group ticks all those boxes. Plus the name is one of the best "-ettes" names you could come up with (Pipettes, Noisettes, etc.). Quick, fun, and sharp.

And since I was surprised to have not seen anything else from them on the site, here's a bonus video:
