FMD 12.18.2020: BEST OF 2020 LINEUP

So, hey, I should have gotten this out sooner. More people volunteered than I remembered.

Here's what I'm thinking: I want everyone to have proper exposure, and holidays and weekend aren't great for that. I'm going to stretch out the spots this time which is going to cause us to spill into the new year. Sorry about that. We'll get this out in a more timely manner next year*.

MAZATLAN, GAME 46

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 3-for-3 with a home run (his fourth), a double, two runs, and four RBIs.  Anthony Giansanti was 1-for-2 with a home run (his fourth), two walks, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Francisco Rios struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks.  Roman Pena struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Igancio Murrujo pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Amilcar Gomez was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk.  Hector Soto retired all eight men he faced, striking out one.

The game:  Mazatan scored three in the first, three in the second, and three in the fourth.  Ricardo Valenzuela hit a three-run double in the first inning to get Mazatlan going.

WP:  Rios (6-2).  LP:  Cristian Castillo (0-3).  S:  None.

Stats:  Paredes is batting .371.  Carlos Munoz was 1-for-2 and is batting .306.  Gabino Avalos gave up a run in one inning and has an ERA of 0.96.

GIGANTES

No game scheduled.  They remain 10-11, in fifth place in the Dominican League, 2.5 games out of first, one game out of fourth.  They are at the Toros del Este for a doubleheader today.

LARA, GAME 19

Batting stars:  Gorkys Hernandez was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a double.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Maximo Castillo struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Leonel Campos retired all four men he faced, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Yordan Manduley was 3-for-4.  Carlos Perez was 1-for-4 with a grand slam, his second homer.  Ex-Twin Yohan Pino pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks and striking out three.

The game:  Perez' grand slam broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth.  Three singles had loaded the bases.  Lara scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to make it 5-3.  They had the tying run up to bat in the eighth and on base in the ninth, but could not bring them in.

WP:  Pino (1-1).  LP:  Ex-Twin Logan Darnell (0-2).  S:  Jorge Rondon (5).

Stats:  Josmar Cordero was 0-for-4 and is batting .396.  Vargas is batting .392.  Jecksson Flores is batting .333.  Yonathan Mendoza was 1-for-1 and is batting .318.  Castillo's ERA is 1.86.  Campos' ERA is 1.93.

Record:  Lara is 11-8, in second place in the Venezuelan League West, a half game behind Margarita.

Opposition stars:  Jose Miranda was 3-for-5 with a double.  Jonathan Morales was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs.  Edwin Diaz was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his second) and two runs.  Johneshwy Fargas was 1-for-5 with a three-run homer, his third.

The game:  Diaz' two-run homer in the fifth started the scoring.  It was 4-1 until the ninth, when Fargas hit a three-run homer in a four-run inning that put the game out of reach.

WP:  Giovanni Soto (2-1).  LP:  Kenny Hernandez (0-1).  S:  None.

Stats:  Marrero is batting .571.  Henry Ramos was 0-for-4 and is batting .424.  Emmanuel Rivera was 1-for-4 and is batting .306.  Ex-Twin Danny Ortiz was 0-for-4 and is batting .306.  Nefi Ogando gave up a run in two innings and has an ERA of 1.80.  Rios has an ERA of zero.

Our randomly selected team in the Australian Baseball League, which started last night, is Melbourne.

SYDNEY 12, MELBOURNE 6 IN SYDNEY

Batting stars:  Ex-Twin Delmon Young was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.  Blake Gailen was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs.

Pitching star:  Jon Kennedy pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Trent D'Antonio was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Carlos Cortes was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.  Michael Campbell was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs.  Connor McDonald was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.  Ex-Twin Jacob Younis was 2-for-5.  Josh Guyer struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.

The game:  Sydney scored seven runs in the second inning to take a 9-2 lead.  Sydney had two walks and two hit batsmen in the inning and McDonald had a three-run homer.

WP:  Guyer (1-0).  LP:  Daniel McGrath (0-1).  S:  None.

Stats:  Gailen is batting .667.  Young is batting .667.  Chris Burke was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Jarryd Dale was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Scott Mitchenson retired both batters he faced and has an ERA of zero.  Kennedy has an ERA of zero.

Record:  Melbourne is 0-1, in sixth (last) place in the Australian League, one game behind Sydney.

2003 Rewind: Game Seventy-eight

MILWAUKEE 13, MINNESOTA 1 IN MINNESOTA

Date:  Friday, June 27.

Batting stars:  Jacque Jones was 2-for-3.  Doug Mientkiewicz was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Matt Kinney pitched a complete game, giving up one run on eight hits and one walk and striking out four.  Royce Clayton was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Richie Sexson was 3-for-5 with a home run (his twenty-second), two runs, and five RBIs.  Scott Podsednik was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  John Vander Wal was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his eighth), a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Eddie Perez was 2-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and two runs.  Brooks Kieschnick was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Eric Young was 2-for-5.

The game:  The Brewers didn't have one big inning, but scored two runs five times and three runs once.  It was scoreless until the rhid, when Podsednik hit a two-run double.  Kieschnick's two-run single-plus-error made it 4-0 in the fourth.  Vander Wal hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 6-0.

The Twins got on the board in the sixth when Corey Koskie and Torii Hunter doubled.  But Sexson hit a three-run homer in the seventh to bring the score to 9-1.  Sexson struck again in the eighth, with a two-run single that increased the lead to 11-1.  Kieschnick and Perez hit back-to-back homers in the ninth to make it 13-1.

WP:  Kinney (6-6).  LP:  Kyle Lohse (6-6).  S:  None.

Notes:  Denny Hocking was at second base in place of Luis Rivas.  Morneau was the DH.

With a blowout, the Twins made several substitutions.  Tom Prince replaced A. J. Pierzynski behind the plate in the eighth.  Lew Ford replaced Hunter in center field in the eighth.  Bobby Kielty pinch-hit for Jones in the eighth and remained in the game in right field, with Dustan Mohr moving to left.  Matthew LeCroy pinch-hit for Koskie in the eighth and went to first base, with Mientkiewicz moving to third.

Ford was 0-for-1 and was batting .364.  Koskie was 1-for-3 and was batting .311.  Mientkiewicz was batting .303.  Jones was batting .302.

Johan Santana allowed three runs in 1.1 innings to raise his ERA to 2.51.

Lohse pitched five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk and striking out four.

Kinney, of course, is an ex-Twin.  This was the only time he had a full year as a member of a starting rotation.  He was 10-13, 5.19, 1.47 WHIP.  He was too much for the Twins on this day, though.  As with Mark Buehrle yesterday, the Twins had beaten him up the last time they faced him (6.1 innings, 6 runs), but they couldn't do it a second time.  They would not face him again this season.

Record:  The Twins were 41-37, in second place in the American League Central, two games behind Kansas City.

MAZATLAN, GAME 45

LOS MOCHIS 7, MAZATLAN 5 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Ramon Rios was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Isaac Paredes was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Alejandro Soto struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Francisco Cordoba was 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.  Rodolfo Amador was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Amilcar Gomez was 2-for-5.  Esteban Quiroz was 1-for-2 with a home run (his seventh), three walks, and two runs.

The game:  Carlos Munoz' two-run single in the first gave Mazatlan an early lead, but Los Mochis tied it in the second and went into the lead to stay in the fourth.  It was only 4-3 through seven, but Derick Hall's two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth that put the game out of reach.  Mazatlan got two in the ninth, but a baserunning error ended the game.

WP:  Santiago Gutierrez (2-4).  LP:  Edgar Torres (2-5).  S:  None.

Stats:  Paredes is batting .353.  Munoz is batting .304.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-1 and is batting .300.

Record:  Mazatlan is 22-23, in seventh place in the Mexican Pacific League, six games behind Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Mexicali.

GIGANTES, GAME 21

GIGANTES 7, ESCOGIDO 2 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Moises Sierra was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Juan Francisco was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Scott Harkin pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk and striking out three.  Matt Dermody retired all five men he faced, striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Estevan Florial was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Tai Tiedemann pitched 2 shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

The game:  The Gigantes scored single runs in the first, third, and fourth, then put the game out of reach with four in the seventh.  Escogido got both of their runs in the eighth.

WP:  Harkin (1-1).  LP:  Casey Harman (0-2).  S:  None.

Stats:  Alfredo Marte was 0-for-3 and is batting .364.  Ronald Guzman was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Dermody and Jesus Reyes each has an ERA of zero.  Raynel Espinal pitched a scoreless inning and has an ERA of 1.17.

Record:  The Gigantes are 10-11, in fifth place in the Dominican League, 2.5 games behind Este.  They are one game behind fourth-place Escogido.

Pitching stars:  Luis Medina struck out nine in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Robby Rowland pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one walk and striking out one.  Jacob Condra-Bogan and Nicholas Padilla each pitched a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Rey Fuentes was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs.  Miguel Amaya was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The game:  Mayaguez scored three in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  T. J. Rivera's two-run single broke the tie.  Caguas scored two in the seventh but did not get the tying run past first base.

Stats:  Ramos is batting .483.  Ortiz is batting .344.  Emmanuel Rivera and T. J. Rivera are each batting .313.  Medina, Rowland, Condra-Bogan, and Padilla each has an ERA of zero.  Holden Capps gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 2.45.
