I probably listened to less new music this year than I ever have before. I'm going to try to remedy that some in 2018. But this is one I've been digging a lot. This version is kind of crazy... I mean, there's a tuba. But the song proper is awesome.

Loading... Sometimes there are songs that are played in TV episodes or movies that just... hit right. I'm thinking primarily of songs that already exist out in the world, and then get brought into the show/film. When they work right they just deepen the whole experience. The one that pops immediately to my mind is Moby's "When It's Cold I'd Like To Die" used in Stranger Things. I know there have been others throughout my life. I'm curious what has worked brilliantly in others' minds? Any times you've said "oh, they should have used this song instead!" or anything like that?

Alright, let's do this. Nibs dropped Lindsey Whalen as a suggestion for the MN Sports Mount Rushmore, and I find myself curious what others would come up with.
The rules are simple: you get 4 people (no less, no more). You can only use athletes who played for Minnesota teams (we'll keep out the Sid Hartmans and Bud Grants), but can include non-athletic factors in your decision (Kent Hrbek now advertises for a local company, Alan Page was a MN Supreme Court Justice!). This is not limited to athletes from Minnesota, though I think most people would agree that being from MN probably helps.

For my guest DJ week I'm playing covers, and I was entirely planning on something along those lines for FMD, but we've done that before, and today's song gave me a better idea: pick your five favorite songs of the millennium. I mean, it's an arbitrary point, but it seems less arbitrary than a lot of other points we could choose.
And yes, of course, the millennium started on January 1, 2001. So releases in the year 2000 are right out.
I've got 3 of mine so far:
Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe"
Rilo Kiley's "Portions For Foxes"
The Avett Brother's "Laundry Room"
I'm still working on the rest. Far too many candidates. This is tough.
This might not quite fit my stated theme of "newer" artists covering "older" artists, but it's close enough. Besides, this might be my single favorite song released since the turn of the millennium (a question I think about a fair amount) and I honestly don't know if I love the original or the cover more. Either way, enjoy!

Seriously, these guys have never been played on this site, near as I can tell. Do yourslf a favor and check out both "Heavy Bells" and "Marigold" and go from there.
