Game 70 recap: Reds 6 Twins 0

The Twins were shutout for the 7th time this year as the Reds beat the Twins 6-0. It wasnt a fair fight to begin with as the Reds threw out ace Johnny Cueto, while the Twins were trying to get by with a Duensing/Swarzak tandem and pray for some offense. The offense didnt happen as Reds pitchers limited the Twins to 3 hits and a walk.

Duensing wasnt that bad, but ran out of gas in the 4th inning and the meat of the Reds order came up and did all the damage. Brandon Phillips blasted a 2 run HR to straightaway center and Scott Rolen added a RBI double.

The Twins still have a chance to win the series Sunday afternoon, and after that finally get back to playing American League teams.

Notes:
-Joe Mauer's double gives him 15 on the year. He is third on the team in doubles behind Willingham (19) and Span (17)
-Justin Morneau had the day off. He has 11 hits in 53 plate appearances since June 8th, the start of the extended interleague part of the schedule.
-Anthony Swarzak pitched 4 innings of relief. He has now pitched 35.2 innings of relief. Alex burnett lead the team with 36 relief innings.
-Josh Willingham was hit by a pitch for the 10th time this year. The last time a Twins player had 10 or more HBP in a season was Denard Span in 2009 (10). The club record is Chuck Knoblauch's 19 in 1996.
-Matt Capps pitched. He has not been traded for a ham steak yet.

Game 68 Recap: Sandwich

I did not watch or listen to the Twins at all last night. Here's a link to the official mlb.com story, which I'm guessing nobody will click on because who cares? Instead of recapping the game, let me recap the sandwich I made for dinner.

I'm traveling to Europe next week and I'm endeavoring to use up all my perishable food before I leave, so I basically emptied the fridge for this bad boy. I started with two slices of whole wheat bread. One one slice, I spread a thick layer of extra-garlicky hummus. On the other slice, an even thicker layer of 2% cottage cheese. After that, the ingredients as follows: diced red onion. Finely chopped green pepper. Shaved carrot. Sliced grape tomatoes. Cucumber slices? Of course. And a big heap of fresh spinach. Topped off with a pile of mesquite-smoked deli-sliced turkey breast. Then I drizzled it with Italian salad dressing, and doused it with Frank's hot sauce because #YOLO.

And, my friends, let me tell you... it was

Game 65: Brewers 4, Twins 5

In a 15 inning game, Swizzlesnacks gets the "W". DSpan with the walk off RBI single.

35 hits between the 2 teams, only 6 extra base hits.
Twins with 20 hits, and Span had the only extra base hit with a double.
Twins relievers pitched 9 shutout innings.
Twins pitchers walked 5 and struck out only 7.

"I was just trying to get us to dinner," Span said, smiling.

"Jeff Gray was the pitcher of the game as far as I'm concerned," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

"I'm pretty stiff," he said. "It's good timing for the off day tomorrow." Joe Mauer

Willinghammer had a rough day going 0-6 with 4 K's. He reached base a single time by way of a BB. As Padre would say, "Days like that are bound to happen!"

That is all.

Game 65: RE-RUN

I DVR'd this and tried watching it, but I got a rerun of that game where Plouffe hit no home runs and Hendriks didn't pitch very well. I think I'm going to call DirectTV about this box, this is like the tenth time it's shown me this game instead of the one I was trying to watch.

Anyone want to fill me in on what happened?

Game 60: Phillies 7, Twins 11

Padre covered for me - I'll pay it forward.

Big night offensively for both clubs as they combined for 31 hits. Blackburn gets the W and the Twins got 3 homeruns (Willingham, Span, Plouffe!). Revere, Doumit and Plouffe all went 3-5, Carroll 3-4 and Mauer 2-4 with a walk. Dozier was 0-5 but committed no errors.

JI JIM was 2-4 with 2 RBI.

Burton, Perk-n-play, and Capps all pitched clean innings after Dunce gave up 3 runs in the 6th (that mess was cleaned up by Burnett).

The Twins are now 7-3 in their last 10 and 6-1 at home since being swept by Detroit at the end of May.

game 58 recap: cubs @ twins

Tragedy struck in the ninth inning of yesterday's baseball game between the cubs and the twins. The potential was there for an epic three inning save, but apparenly a little thing called "letting a guy finish what he came into the seventh inning of" is a foreign concept to Twins management. I have but one question.

"Why do you hate joy, gardy?"

In better news, the bats got going yesterday. Plouffe has declared war on all opposing pitchers. Pretty much everyone seems to be hitting well lately.

Meanwhile, Scott Diamond's ERA is 1.61. Seriously. I know it's a flaawed stat and all, but that's pretty sweet.

Game 57 Recap: Twins 8 Cubs 7 (10 innings)

Denard Span could feel his brain swimming laps between his ears.

This whole game has been one big blur, people rising up out of the dizzying maelstrom of colors and sounds shouting that we were "coming back!". How many times do we have to come back in this one? It seemed like they had come back 3 or 4 times already, let's see there was the Doumit homer (ed. note - to give the Twins a 6-5 lead), the Plouffe homer (ed. note - to tie the game at 2), the time Babe the Blue Ox ran over the Cubs catcher while Jim Thome dressed as Paul Bunyan applauded from the third base coaches box (ed. note - ????), the time Mastrioanni hit a triple - wait, Mastrioanni hit a triple? this flu is seriously messing with my head (ed. note - Mastrioanni did indeed hit a triple, it scored Dozier and tied the game at 5), and now Morneau had tripled to score Willingham and Gardy is shouting something at me.

Liddle is next to me now. Suddenly I'm on the field. Third base, I think. Yes. I focus all my energy on the bright yellow dragon standing in the batters box (ed. note - Casilla, probably). I hear the crack of the bat and I just start running. It's only after I get back to the dugout that Joe explains to me that I was out by about 20 feet and looked kind of like a fool. Honestly, at this point I'm more focused on not passing out than whether the game is over or not.

Because of that focus it took me a while to realize that I might have to bat. I'm conscious enough to realize this is probably a bad idea as the pitcher's mound currently appears to be occupied by a particularly malevolent shade of purple to my eyes. Josh Willingham looks at me in the on-deck circle and asks if I'm feeling OK. I try to reassure him, but given his look of concern, I'm guessing I ended up speaking in tongues again. I hear him mutter "I had better just take care of this myself." As he walks up to the plate.
