2016 Game 37(!?) – Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers
Halfway through a six game road trip, the Twins take their first trip of the year to Motown. Finally stringing together 2 road wins for the first time this year (hell, two wins in a row anywhere this is relatively impressive), they look to keep the momentum going against a Tigers team that's also no great shakes. Of course, they swept the Twins in Minnesota a couple weeks back, so I should probably stop flapping my gums.
Making it 3 in a row will be no easy task as the Twins will have to go through Jordan Zimmerman to do it. Other than some tough assignments against Hamels and Scherzer, Zimmerman has been outstanding this year. Twins will send out Berrios, who can hopefully put together a few more pieces at the major league level.

Game 23. Detroit at Minnesota. 7:10pm.
The NFL started its THREE DAY draft yesterday. 3 days to go through 8 rounds. The over coverage of every slightest bit of smoke GMs send out (99% of it is false info) gets blasted on ESPN. One tries to tune out the sports nets, but it gets filtered trough social media. Its all very annoying. Am I'm saying this as a person who still likes to watch football (although my fandom is waning the older I get). I do dislike everything else that surrounds the game.
Why am I bringing this up? I am very happy that baseball's draft hasnt become this huge spectacle of banality. I get heavy coverage of the first round, and to an extent the second (its where the bigger contracts are offered) but after that, its just a bunch of names and the hope that a few of them sign to fill out minor league rosters and hope you hit a gem.
This is all a half formed idea, but it comes down to this : I really dislike draft coverage of all sports.
On to the game. If you take out the 0-9 start to the season, the Twins are 7-6. Thats not bad! Most games have been watchable (although heart pounding and clenched teeth when the Twins have a lead late and the bullpen starts to come in). Maybe the Twins can claw their way to .500 by the 4th of July.
I am also very happy Joe Mauer is back to Joe Mauer Super Baseball Player . Coming into the game he is leading the American League in OnBasePercentage (.459) and is just off the leaderboard in OPS (.907).
Game 145: Tigers 7, Twins 4 (in 12 innings)
Consensus after the game seemed to be that:
a) Molitor made some curious moves re: pinch-running and defensive substitutions which came back to bite him (see socal's comments in the Game Log),
b) The Twins offense had numerous chances to put this thing away, but simply couldn't get it done (3-13 w/ RISP),
c) Jepsen was bound to blow a save with the Twins at some point - unfortunately, it came in game that was both very winnable and very important,
d) Hicks still has some work to do on keeping his head in games: he was doubled off 2nd in the 6th and didn't hit the cut-off man in the 9th, allowing the eventual tying runner to advance to 2nd.
e) Duensing sucks,
f) It's all Mauer's fault, all the time.*
And the positive:
With his solo homer off Norris in the third, Eddie Rosario became the 17th rookie to record 10 homers, 10 triples, 10 doubles and 10 stolen bases in a season. He was the first do it since Hanley Ramirez in 2006. He's also just the sixth rookie to reach those marks with at least 10 outfield assists.

They're still only 1.5 games behind Houston for the 2nd Wild Card spot, with seventeen games left and a fairly favorable list of opponents. Channeling JeffA, I'd say they're ready to start their seventeen game winning streak tonight against LAAAAA.
*even though he's reached base safely in 36-straight-games, a career high.

This game matters.
What a nice thing to be able to say. I'll be hitting up Target Field a couple of times still this season, and its a great feeling to know that the games matter still.
The Tigers are sending out Daniel Norris against the Twins. In turn Ervin is going to mow down some MoTown folk.

Brian Dozier is not an All Star. Yet. He finished second in the fan voting for the final spot. but as we all know, there will be injuries and pull outs before the game so I am not shedding a tear for him.

Because the Twins signed you to be the OAFFOTF (once and future face of the franchise), all you really need to do to have a good night at the park is smile.
Because swinging for the fences when a hit to the outfield ties the game shows you're a leader.
Because your former team understands your value and therefore didn't make you an offer ... but your former, former, former team saw something that no one else saw: leadership.

Let's be honest, the real story tonight was the Tigers running themselves out of the game (Boyer being the lucky recipient), Joe Mauer hitting his 313th double to move past Kent Hrbek and into sole possession of third place on the Twins career list, the Twins defense playing solid and their offense putting together some decent at-bats and scoring a few runs to make things interesting in the bottom of the 9th. To be sure, Milone wasn't strong and Detroit jumped him early, but the boys kept playing and had a chance there at the end. Unfortunately, Danny Santana was asked to bunt and Dozier wasn't able to do anything against Soria either. ii with a chance to show us what for and failing miserably was just the proverbial icing on the cake.
Go Wild.
2015 Game 19: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins
After being thoroughly abused by the Tigers in Motown to open the season earlier this month, the felines come to the friendly confines of Target Field. Over 3 games, el Tigres shut down the Twinkies to a tune of 22-1. Just about how we were all expecting to start off the new season (even if we were hoping for something else).
The end of the inaugural month of baseball has found a bit more success, though we started with a very low bar. Somehow, the hometown team is only a couple games away from .500, and only (heh) 4.5 games out of first. After splitting the recent road trip, Minnesota comes back for an 11-game homestand, their longest of the season. Unfortunately, they'll open it up against the same 3 pitchers that toyed with them to start the year.
Of course, before you get too excited (seriously, what's wrong with you?), keep this little nugget from the Cornman in mind:
The team is last in the league in OBP, SLG, OPS (and perhaps obviously OPS+) and RBI, 14th out of 15 for BA and tied for last in Runs Scored. The Twins have a combined 36 extra base hits - 15 less than the league average.
