Game 39: Twins @ Pirates

Ugh, Nolasco (3-1, 6.38 ERA, 4.85 xFIP) vs. F-Bomb (1-3, 2.96 ERA, 3.19 xFIP)

I am....not so confident in this matchup other than the fact that Nolasco gets to pitch against an NL team. I don't know, maybe it'll help make him less 'ugh' and more 'meh'?

I haven't paid much attention, but it looks like Liriano is generally pitching pretty well this year, striking dudes out all over the place. He does have a .215 BABIP, though, so he might be getting a bit lucky on the balls that make it out into the field. Hopefully that is the case and that average heads north a bit tonight.

In addition to a mid-season interleague matchup, the Wolves have their annual "playoff" tonight (7:30 on ESPN) in which they participate in a selection of ping-pong balls to determine which crappy team gets the good picks in the draft. This event will set off a solid month of speculating just which incorrect pick Flip will make. Should be fun!

Game 33: Twins at Tigers

Gibson (3-2, 2.97 ERA, 5.13 xFIP) vs. Simon (4-1, 3.44 ERA, 4.16 xFIP)

After a day off, the Twins get to head to Detroit for a series against the sometimes in first place, sometimes not Tigers. (currently not). Things haven't gone too swimmingly for the Twins against Detroit this year. Part of that could be things like letting Stauffer pitch to Cabrera (or anyone, but Cabrera especially). Of course, that can't happen this series.

Gibson looks to continue a pretty good start to his season. I am less optimistic he will tonight because it looks like he's been fairly lucky so far. He's striking pretty much no one out, even for a guy who doesn't really strike many guys out to begin with. That doesn't bode well if those FB's starting turning into HR's (6.5% HR/FB right now).

Fortunately, I think that first series of the season was the outlier for the Twin's offense, so it looks like they can, at least, score some runs against Tigers pitching.

I am assuming (hoping) Hicks will get the start tonight, although I can't seem to get any access to any lineup information because clicking "preview" on the Twins site sends me to season ticket information. Nice work guys.

Game 27: A’s vs. Twins

Chavez (0-2, 2.55 ERA, 4.13 xFIP) vs. May (2-1, 4.43 ERA, 3.56 xFIP)

Trevor May gets the start tonight against Jesse Chavez. A quick look at Fangraphs shows an interesting contrast between the two starters. On the one hand, we have May who's xFIP shows he's been a bit better than his ERA would indicate, pitching better since a not so good first start. Then there's Chavez who's xFIP indicates the opposite and who is coming off of a not so good start after a decent one, with also pitching decent out of the pen to start the year.

The Twins look to continue their win streak, aided by getting the right teams at the right time. Apparently, a four game series with the White Sox is what any struggling team needs to turn things around in the short term, and a scuffling A's team is a good help to keep it going.

I expect big things out of May tonight as he's getting start number five on cinco de mayo.

Game 20: Tigers vs. Twins

Sanchez (1-2, 5.96 ERA) vs. Big Pelf! (1-0, 2.65 ERA)

Welcome back to Tuesday game previews, Big Pelf!

Admittedly, he had a pretty good outing in his last start. It could even be argued that his last two were good. Hopefully that is something he can keep up tonight, although with his allergies to strikeouts, that may be difficult against the Tigers. A quick look at his 4.99 xFIP doesn't fill me with a ton of confidence that this isn't just smoke and mirrors.

I'm going to be in Toledo for the next couple days, so I might actually be able to watch this series. I hope to see a win against this dang team.

Game 14: Twins @ Royals

Milone (2-0, 2.08 ERA) vs. Vargas (1-1, 6.00 ERA)

Hooray, the first Tuesday game of the year! And it isn't Big Pelf starting!

I suppose one could say that Milone is the Twins new ace in this SSST of the first month of the season. He's the only one having any real consistent success. Considering the brutality of the Twins OF defense, his team leading 6.9 SO/9 could be a part of that. (although I do expect Hughes's totals to come up from where they are at the moment.)

My main point here is to say that I really can't wait until the young'uns in the lower levels show some success and make their way to the big club.

Here's to hoping the Twins can rough up Vargas like they did last week, if only due to reports yesterday of moldy hot dogs being served at Kaufman stadium for dollar dog day on Friday. (Ok, it was against the A's, but still. Nice reminder that, yes everyone liked the Royals last year but they are still owned by terrible people.)

I was debating whether I should post an Epica video, since there's been a number of them in the past because they are awesome. Instead, I decided to go with a band with a similar sound (though who have been split-up for awhile now.)

Evenoire – Drops of Amber

This is a newer band that I came across last year when I picked up their second release, Herons on a whim and I loved it. Metal-archives describes them as gothic/folk metal. It seems like having a female lead singer gets that gothic tag automatically stuck on, even though this sounds more like a traditional metal style with folk elements (mostly in the vocal work). But anyway, that doesn't even really matter as long as the music is good.
