We've apparently done this topic before, as I learned upon searching the site after settling on my Guest DJ theme. But whatever... it's been long enough, more people have kids? More people have songs? I dunno... something.
Anyway, what do you sing to your kids? Especially at bed time?
This is another of my absolute favorite songs of all time, and a perfect one for putting the kids into a restful, relaxed state. It does wonders on that front for me too.
I was first introduced to this song in band class, and I prefer straight instrumental versions, but since I often sing the song to the kids (as best I can... no justice is done there), I thought I'd drop a sung version here. Enjoy!

One of my kids' favorites, and a really on-point bedtime song, is BNL's "When You Dream". This video ain't exactly quality, but it was about the best I could do for a live performance. The album version of this song is definitely worth a listen, and the lyrics are pretty fun too.

Obviously not a song I sing to my kids, but one I'll often play as they're drifting off to sleep. It has become one of my favorite pieces, and I think this performance nails it (minus the coughing audience members). Right about 2 minutes in, when it almost seems like the song could be winding up, but then it shifts into an other-world quality... perfectly dream-like. I haven't stopped being wowed by that, despite hearing the song probably a hundred times.

Welcome to another iteration of Philosofer week on our video series. This time around I decided to spin some tracks that we regularly sing or play for our children, especially focused on trying to get them to bed. I hope you enjoy!
We'll start off with one of the most over-played songs, but one that I still love all the same. I thought this version offered something a little new, plus Rufus Wainwright's iteration is my favorite anyway, so bonus!

I was recently chatting with my brother-in-law about albums that did not age well. One that came to mind for both of us was The Love Below. Now, I enjoy Outkast plenty, and when that album came out, I adored it (along with Speakerboxxx). But upon listening again, it turned out what used to seem brilliant now seemed like, in my brother-in-law's words, "a novelty album with a couple of hits squeezed in for some reason." Yup.
What are other albums or songs that just haven't aged well? Is that a function of personal growth, society changing, musical tastes changing, etc? Is it any different than fashion or film or... anything else? I can think of movies that once seemed great too, that haven't aged well. Is music the exact same? Why are there so many lasting songs then?
So give us songs that didn't stand the test of time, and drop your list if you've got one.
Somtims, I'm just too lazy to gt my othr kyboar out an us that, so I just skip rtain lttrs, an hop for th bst. I think it's a mtaphor. I miss Jo Maur lik I miss my ability to typ th lttr bfor "f".
Not too long ago I found myself lamenting, not for the first time, the death of Rilo Kiley. They were one of my favorite bands. Really, they were the band that first hooked me into more modern independent music. I'd had some of their music in heavy rotation lately, and even their not-as-good stuff was working for me. It seems pretty clear that this a band that will never ever be getting back together. Which is really too bad, because the other stuff the members have worked on apart from Rilo Kiley is... okay. I still like Jenny Lewis just fine... but the magic of Rilo Kiley just isn't there any more.
So maybe we've talked about this before, but I'm curious about bands that have broken up where that's really a shame. Who hasn't been able to capture the magic in the same way? Who needed that partner/group? Who would you love to have just one more album from?
Drop lists, and talk bad band breakups. And enjoy the snow on its way!
I don't remember if we've done this topic before, but we're all stuck inside, the snow is piling up, and if cabin fever hasn't set in, you're a yeti, or one of the citizens living in CA. Or possibly both, I guess. What do we really know about BS?
I digress. Because that's what happens when you have cabin fever. Your mind starts going in strange new directions, most of which aren't productive.
Anyway, let's talk cabin fever music. And I'm not thinking about remedies - we're not looking for the music that warms you up. Let's go the other way. What are the songs that play with sanity? That feel just a little off, or make you feel just a little off. That try to touch on something just a bit outside...
And drop your 10's, or, if you're a yeti, talk about whatever you want.
