2023 Game Log 121 – Tigers at Twins

Tigers in town for a quick two game series after pummeling the Twins last week in 3 out of 4 games. Twins feeling a bit better about themselves after a decent showing against a good Phillies team so hopefully the good vibes continue. Also Royce Lewis back up after his injury. I really want him to continue to mash like he did before the injury.

Bailey Ober on the mound for the Twins and Alex Faedo for the Tigers. Probably the Twins inability to do much against Faedo last week was one of the biggest disappointments of that Motown visit. I'm thinking the ass bats were left in Detroit and ol' Alex Faedo will get a rude welcome here in Minneapolis

Game time at 6:40 and looks like an absolute gorgeous night for baseball.

2023 Game 116: Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers

Ober's quality start run came to a crashing end in July, lasting only four innings and giving up six runs. His start last week against Arizona didn't qualify due to pitching five innings but his game score of 50 is exactly average. Ober's only start against Detroit fit the quality start metric exactly with six innings and three runs allowed. That would have worked on Monday but only Haddix perfection had a chance to earn a win yesterday.

Alex Faedo might be the guy to fix the offense. A former first round pick, he finally made it to the majors last year. He has a career 5.70 ERA, and 4.70 FIP, in 89 ⅓ innings for a negative WAR but good for him to make the majors at 26. He faced the Twins once last year, earning a no decision with two runs given up in five innings that the Tigers eventually won 3-2.

2023 Game Log 115 – Twins at Tigers

Wow, what a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday at this time we were all grumpy about the Twins, their lack of movement at the trade deadline, uninspired baseball, and inability to take advantage of an historically bad division. Now the Twins are riding high off a 5-game winning streak, the bats are responding and all of a sudden the Twins are sitting on a 5.5 game lead. Also they now have a better record than both the Yankees and Red Sox.

Sonny Gray on the mound for the Twins coming off his first win since April. Eduardo Rodriguez for the Tigers. He is arguably their best starter and has put up decent stats. I'm a little worried the still strikeout prone Twins batters may add to his healthy K/9 totals.

2023 Game Log 114: Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers

After a sweet sweep of the D-backs, the Twins hit the road for four games in Detroit. Hopefully the streak continues. Games are going to start a little early this series so all you old timers should be able to make your bedtimes.

Twins are in the middle of a busy schedule, playing 16 games in 17 days. 13 of those games have been/will be on the road (though let's all forget about that series in KC). After Detroit we head to Philly, but then the schedule eases back a bit with a chunk of home games and a bit more rest.

Tonight, Pablo López takes the mound for the Twins following a couple decent performances (including one I got to see in person at Busch). Joey Wentz, recently called back up from Triple A, will start for the Tigers. He hasn't had much luck this year as a starter, including against the Twins when he was in the rotation earlier this year. It sounds like he was being used for long relief in the minors, so he might not go too long in this game no matter what, but let's try to force the issue.

2023 Game 111: AZ at MN; Celebrate Good Times

This weekend the Minnesota Twins will be inducting Joe Mauer into the Twins Hall of Fame, and the celebration starts tonight with some stuff, I assume. The induction happens on Saturday (and I'll be at the game!). So this weekend isn't so much about the 1st place* Twins, as it is about one of the best catchers to ever play the game. And we get to claim him. So that's fun.

Tonight Merrill Kelly pitches against Bailey Ober. Who wishes Joe Mauer was catching him.

2023 Game 110 – Twins at Cardinals

Not a lot of time today so just a few quick takes:

  • The Twins are a .500 team in a sub-.500 division. It may be enough to make a postseason cameo appearance but that's about it.
  • Standing pat at the trade deadline is not a bad thing if you're not getting past the first round of the playoffs anyway.
  • Luis Arraez will probably become the first player to win back to back batting championships in different leagues.
  • My wife calls leaving RISP "decorating the bases." The Twins do a lot of base decorating.
