FMD – Holiday Schedules?

Perhaps the regularly scheduled author was like me...thinking that Friday features were pushed back? Last night, I rousted myself out of bed at 11:45 pm because I'd neglected to put the trash can out for Friday morning pickup. Got back into the house and realized, "Monday was a holiday. Pickup is delayed a day. I could have stayed in bed."

Drop(kick)* your lists.

*Sunday night at the Armory!

FMD — The Current’s Essential 893

As part of their Spring Member Drive The Current did a list! The 893 most essential songs. Apparently they got in over 4,000 entries with nearly 12,000 different songs. No surprises at the top as Purple Rain takes honors, Bohemian Rhapsody 2nd, and Heroes third. I had 2 songs place in the 893 (Bastards of Young, Into the Mystic). Of course I have quibbles all over the place but was surprised that 20th Century Boy by T Rex didn't make the list at all. That is practically the definition of an essential rock song. Also I would've thought that I Am a Scientist and Motor Away from Guided By Voices would have been in the 500s or 600s. But that's just me.

Here's the entire 893

FMD 5/11/18: The Last Song You’ll Ever/Never Hear

So say you were dying, in as nice a way as possible, and you could kind of pick any song to fade out to... what song would you pick?

And, for that matter, what song would you want them to carry you out to/play at the cemetery/as your ashes are spread/etc.? You'll not hear that one, but others will associate it with you. What would pick?

And, yeah, I suppose I did a funeral music topic once upon a time, but hopefully this is a distinct enough topic: not just end-of-life songs, but truly last songs.

FMD — Live Albums

Live albums get some deserved and undeserved derision. Usually they are obligatory, just a one off to fulfill a contract obligation and they rarely capture what it's like "being there." In addition almost all live albums have the crowd noise artificially inserted, vocals are fixed, and sometimes guitars are augmented in studio. On the other hand, where else but a live album are you going to hear a 20 minute version of Cowgirl in the Sand?

Kiss Alive! is famous for probably being barely "live." The some reports are the only actual live parts are Peter Criss' drums.

I bring this up because this past weekend was the 40th anniversary of Cheap Trick playing at The Budokan theater in Japan. Cheap Trick Live at Budokan was originally suppose to be a Japanese only album but it sold many imports that it was eventually released stateside in February of 1979. The original album was only about 1/2 the concert and eventually Cheap Trick released the rest of the concert in a second album and then the whole show (actually it's from two different concerts two days apart). I have take both Budokan I and II and rearranged the songs according to the set list. I still love this album and listen to is every so often.

What other live albums to you like? Throw in your list.

FMD 4/20/18: Dance Recital

We're starting to get into the season for dance recitals. My oldest two kids dance, and their theme this year is "Broadway". Aquinas gets to dance to "Just Can't Wait to Be King" and Aristotle gets "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow."

As themes for dance recitals go, it's not the worst. I mean, last year's was "Take it from the top" and I still don't know really what that meant.

So today let's talk Dance Recitals. What was your first dance song? Theme? What theme would you choose for a dance recital? What song would you love to perform a dance to?

I know this topic might not be our usual song and dance, but I think that kind of makes it fun, right?

FMD 4/6/18: “I Can Sing A Rainbow”, Or “What Songs With Orange?”

My kids are always singing made up songs. They often involve colors. Today, I issue the challenge that everyone come up with a color list of songs. Just 1 song for each of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. No repeating songs someone else has already used. If you blank on one, that's okay, come back to it later, or not at all.

Let's see if this works?

Also, drop your list, or discuss music. It's all good.

FMD 03/30/18 – Bucket List Bands

I made a random 10 and saw there was nowhere to put it, so... hi!

I saw Hot Snakes on the 16th after waiting to see them 14 years. They were one of the bands I figured I'd never have a chance to see live, a shocking number of which I've actually had a chance to see. I think the two left on my list are the pAper chAse (extremely unlikely) and Butthole Surfers (mayyyybe). Do you have any artists like this on your list still? Drop your lists.
