Game 73: Twins (34-38) vs. Marlins (25-50. oof, it sucks to be a Marlins fan these days.)

Correia (6-4, 3.87 ERA) vs. Fernandez (4-4, 3.05 ERA)

For the second time this year, the Twins get to play the Marlins in a two game set. Somehow, they lost one of those games last time (and looking it up its because Pelfrey was pitching during that particularly fun time of the year), so I should probably refrain from too much confidence. That said, I'm on a little Tuesday win-streak on days when I actually remember to do my game log, and I full expect to continue that here tonight.

The Marlins are the lowest scoring team in the league, and its not even close. I'm not convinced they'll score 500 runs this year.  Somehow, though, they actually aren't last in the league in run scoring differential because Houston still has a team in which a move to the AL has done no good. That's a good thing for Correia, who, not being a mind reader so I can only assume, will be looking to continue his surprisingly/un-surprisingly year of decent pitching while we spend the rest of the week talking about Kyle Gibson.

For this week's travels, I'll be in Charlotte, NC. Or, I wanted to be in Charlotte, but was forced by the person I am traveling with to stay in Shelby, NC, about an hour from Charlotte and likely containing less beer. It'll be interesting to see if the Bobcats to Hornets changover will be starting this week, or if the city has to wait until its official.

2013 Game 72: Twins at Indians

Oh, good, Pedro Hernandez is back and he's on the hill today! Amazingly, he's by far the more successful this year of today's two pitchers, as Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 8.40) should help to make this a high-scoring affair.

It seems like there's very little to say about a team hovering just under .500. It's not bad enough for mockery and they're not good enough that it's reasonable to talk about the playoffs. So, we wait for the young kids to turn this thing around, and wonder what kind of pitching the Twins will get in return for guys like Willingham and Morneau. I've never been the rosterbating type, so I'll leave that to everyone else.

Mauer's currently holding off a run from Wieters for the All-Star Game starting spot. This is in no way a reasonable thing, so I'm considering voting for the first time in several years. But, I'll probably blow it off in the end.

This appears to be the MLB.tv free game of the day.

Game 71: Twins @ Clevelanders

Walters vs. Kluber

I've got a bad feeling about this one. The high-strikeout, low-walk pitchers seem to be eating our lunch this season (anecdotal. no facts or proof to back this up.)

Maybe the Twins will surprise us, though. After all, they do still have Joe Mauer on the team. As you'll see in a moment, he's pretty good at baseball.

Game 69: Twins vs. WhiteSox

DAY GAME ALERT!!!!

Going for the SWEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

Scott Diamond vs. John Danks

I would say that one of the best parts about Baseball is the draft. Specifically the fact that it's not held until the middle of next year and the players won't make an impact for years down the line. When watching a bad Timberwolves or Vikings team it's easy to root for a loss to get better draft position. With a bad Twins team I can still always hope for a win. Especially against the White Sox.

SWEEEEEEEEEEP!!!

Game 67: Twins vs. White Sox

Another Tuesday Another Pelfrey (3-6, 6.12 ERA) vs. Axelrod (3-4, 4.26 ERA)

So the Twins and the White Sox both stink, although the Twins stink a game and a half better. Hopefully, Pelfrey can continue with his recent decent pitching tonight, although I would still prefer to see someone like a Kyle Gibson starting games for the Twins, but that might just be me.

I don't really know anything about Axelrod. A quick look at his numbers show a guy who is meh to crappy, and who's not striking out as many guys this year as last. So that's good news for the Twins. Hopefully, the Twins can add a little space between them and the dumpster.

2013 Father’s Day Game: Tigers at Twins

I have been to one Father's Day game in my life.

My memory lies, it turns out. The game in question was definitely against the Padres, and it was on Father's Day, 2005. However, I thought I remembered Johan getting ejected early in the game, allowing Jake Peavy to cruise to an easy win. However, Peavy didn't even pitch, while Darrell May cruised to a win. Johan gave up one run in the sixth, then a bases-clearing double with two outs in the seventh that got him pulled. The Padres went on to win, 5-1, and who has two thumbs and didn't see a Johan Santana win in person in Minnesota, ever? THIS guy! (I did, however, attend this game at Safeco, where two guys behind me were bemoaning the fact that they were "getting shut down by a no-name pitcher." A writer in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer essentially repeated that statement the next day, displaying an utter lack of respect for his own work).

As for that Padres game, I was to go with a nine-month-old Skim as well as the Milkmaid. It was Father's Day, Johan was pitching, we all had the day free and I hadn't yet started running Spookymilk Survivor so my schedule didn't revolve around it. However, the Milkmaid ended up being called in to work by her ruthless douchebag bosses, who told her Father's Day wasn't an important enough holiday for her to miss and they needed to add her to the schedule (I was not consulted for comment on their opinion). I watched the game with Skim and folks around us marveled at how quiet she was - a trend that she continued all throughout early childhood, where people would get up after dinner or event and remark that they had no idea they were sitting near a child.

The game sucked, though, and it was rainy afterward. And, me being me, I couldn't remember where the f*&^ I had parked. I knew it was in one of the ramps, but I hadn't written it down, since at 27 years old I was still trusting my never-good sense of direction and memory for landmarks. I walked around with Skim, who barely complained despite the light rain. Once the rain cleared, it got hot. Brutally hot. She still didn't complain but I felt like a heel. She fell asleep in the Baby Bjorn as I spent over two hours combing a four-block area (this is who I am) looking for my car. Finally, I found it in the first parking garage I'd searched, on a floor I'd walked at least twice. I laughed at my own uselessness in the arena of finding things and we drove home.

The Milkmaid, for her part, had only been on at work for two hours. They cut her when the rush died down, a further insult to our day. She asked if the game had gone ridiculously long. It was a rather short one, at 2:23, so I amused her with the postgame story. If she'd been with us, there would have been no problem. The way I remember the spelling of words and names is the way she remembers directions and landmarks.

I don't know how the rest of the day went, but as stupid as everything was, it remains my strangest Father's Day, and it was also my first.

2013 Game 64: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

Rick Porcello
v
Scott Diamond

Dave Cameron looked at the previous 365 days of baseball so he could point out how good the A's have been. That is the team Jeff must be watching; they really might just win out the season. I link to it because the Twins have a .430 winning percentage over the past year, which would be a two game improvement over last year if they maintained that through the end of the season. I expected this to be less depressing when I started, oops.
