Game 26 Recap: Last Chance at .500

Correia fell to earth today. Let us take a moment to commemorate this moment. Gleeman be praised - he tried to warn us.

This feels like the last game we'll see this year where the Twins could've hit .500. Hey, about 10% of the comments in the game thread were about that idea - sounds about right.

Also, I've got to take a moment and mention Aaron Hicks' first MLB home run. I just happened to come into the room at the perfect moment, so it was one of the very few things I saw from the game.

Oh well, they'll get 'em next time (but, as mentioned, probably not the time after that).

Game 26: Minnesota @ Cleveland

The restaurant Linds and I were at switch the channel from the Twins to the Wild right after Parmelee's home run. I figured they had it in the bag. Oh, well. Today is a chance to pull to .500 yet again.

I have to be honest, I thought the days of hanging around .500 were going to be done in mid-April, but the team is been surprisingly able, and I find myself actually optimistic about them. Not so much this year, because I don't think this is anyone's idea of a playoff team, but come next year, there's the workings of a solid team here.

Today's Pitchers
Correia vs. Kazmir

I know Correia's bound to come back down to earth sometime, but Kazmir has been really beatable these last few years (and this year hasn't really done anything to change that so far), so I hope it doesn't happen today.

Game 21: Twins 5, Rangers 0

Twins earn a split of the series with Texas and are now 11-10 on the year. Kevin Correia pitched 8 scoreless innings, scattering 6 hits and picking up 2 strikeouts. He leads all Twins pitchers in Wins (3) and starters in ERA (2.23)  and WHIP (1.07). Morneau hit his 2nd HR of the year, a 2-run shot, and is just behind Willingham in RBI at 11.

The Twins head to Detroit where I assume they'd be happy to replicate the success of their previous trip to Motown.

In other news, the Wild slid bass-ackwards into the playoffs for the first time in 5 years by way of a tiebreaker with Columbus. After an ugly game against Edmonton on Friday night, they beat the Avs in requlation on Saturday to secure the 8th (and final) spot in the Western Conference, finishing the regular season with 55 points at 26-19-3. They now head to Chicago for a best of 5 series. Game 1 is tomorrow (Tues, Apr 30) - puck drops at 7pm.

2013 Game 21: Rangers at Twins

The Twins finish one of the tougher series on the schedule today as Alexi Ogando faces Kevin Correia, who's silencing critics all over the country with his ace-level pitching. Or maybe it's just early. Either way, the Twins are 10-10, and if baseball was handicapped, they'd certainly be leading the division, yes? Ogando's last two starts have been a bit of a mess, as he's given up seven runs in just over nine innings.

The Rangers haven't been beaten on back-to-back days this season. Huh. Also, they've lost five of their last six day games. Which meaningless statistic will come out on top?! This is so exciting!

I know the Twins aren't going anywhere this season, but it sure is fun to see them try. I'd be more than happy with .500 baseball for as long as I can get it, and a four-game split with Texas is much more than I'd even think to ask for.

2013 Game 12: LA Seraphim at Minnesota Gemini

Three weeks ago I was pretty much done with taxes, except for entering one form that my daughter needed to provide. After weeks of nagging, she finally sent it to me last Friday. I plugged it into the old 1040 today, and my refund got a happy ending. What's the lesson? Perseverance pays off. Maybe if the Twins persevere for the next five and a half months they could win the division. Probably not. But it's a good bet it will all come down to the pitching.

Today is Jackie Robinson day around the major leagues and you might see a number 42 here or there. I'll be going to see the movie on Sunday, so no spoilers, please.

Today the Angels send right-hander Joe Blanton to the hill, while the Twins offer Kevin Correia. Blanton in his last start gave up six runs in just over five innings, while Correia gave up three runs in eight innings and carried a shutout through the first seven. One move of note for the Twins, Oswaldo Arcia is called up before tonight's game to replace Wilkin Ramirez, who went on the three-day paternity list Sunday. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

Game 7: First Place Twins at Last Place Royals

For some reason Kansas City has received more than its fair share of musical tributes. Rodgers and Hammerstein gave the city the Broadway treatment with Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City back in 1943. Over the years the town has been lauded in Leadbelly’s Kansas City Papa, Jelly Roll Morton’s Kansas City Stomp, Buck Owens’ The Kansas City Song, Count Basie’s Kansas City Shout, and Van Morrison’s The Eternal Kansas City, not to mention Kansas City Milkman, Kansas City King, Kansas City 90210, Kansas City Shuffle, Kansas City Funk, Kansas City Blues, Kansas City Man Blues, Train from Kansas City, 18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare), and Kansas City Southern by various artists.

MLB.tv Free Game of the Day!

Its pretty silly that was not a Twins game last night. Well make that yesterday anyway. The way the MLB season starts is irritating when you are ready for the whole schedule to start as soon as possible. Anyway, the staggered start is over and the Twins play at home against the Verlanders. Luckily, Justin already had his turn in the rotation. Unluckily, we start Kevin Correia. So it goes. I assume it'll be another cold one at Target Field. So get your warm beverage of choice ready.

Go Twins!

2012 Game Logs: Game 66 Twins @ Pirates

Scott "Possibly Maybe A Future All-Star" Diamond

versus

Kevin "Probably Never An All-Star" Correia

In the weeks approaching the trading deadline I am going to take a look at negotiations that Terry Ryan will be taking part in an attempt to make the Twins better for the future. This week, Terry Ryan makes a stop in Vegas.

Next week: Trade talks heat up and Terry Ryan looks for shop credit.
