The game: Jalisco scored in the first inning when Rodriguez singled and scored from first on Amador's double. Mazatlan came back with four in the second. Giansanti led off the inning with a single and Valenzuela walked. They both scored on a single-plus-error by Edson Garcia. Mota singled to put men on first and third, a double play scored a run, and Rios homered to make it 4-1 Mazatlan.
Jalisco came back with five in the third. With one out Carlos Figueroa and Zazueta singled, Rodriguez doubled home a run, an error made it 4-3, Urrutia had an RBI double to tie it, and Dariel Alvarez delivered a two-run single to make it 6-4 Jalisco.
The scoring continued in the fourth. Garcia reached on an error, but the next two men grounded out, leaving him on third with two down. But Rios tripled and Isaac Paredes doubled, tying the score 6-6. In the fifth, Valenzuela homered to put Mazatlan up 7-6. Garcia walked and Mota singled, putting men on first and third. Figueroa then singled and Rios doubled, making it 9-6 Mazatlan.
Jalisco got two walks in the seventh, but did not score again until Amador homered in the ninth. They got the tying run on base, putting two on with two out, but a ground out ended the game.

Notes: Figueroa was 1-for-5 and is batting .455. Mota is batting .421. Paredes was 1-for-3 with two walks and is batting .381. Carlos Munoz was 1-for-4 and is batting .321.
Despite his batting average, this is the first time Mota has started all year. I don't know why.
Matt Gage started for Mazatlan. He pitched 2.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and no walks and striking out two.
Jose Oyervides started for Jalisco. He pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks and striking out one.

2003 Rewind: Game Fifty
MINNESOTA 4, OAKLAND 3 IN MINNESOTA
Date: Tuesday, May 27.
Batting stars: Corey Koskie was 1-for-3 with a home run, his seventh. Bobby Kielty was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer, his eighth.
Pitching stars: Kenny Rogers pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks and striking out five. Eddie Guardado struck out two in a perfect inning.
Opposition stars: Eric Byrnes was 2-for-4 with a double. Scott Hatteberg was 2-for-4 with a double. Barry Zito struck out ten in an eight inning complete game, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks. Ramon Hernandez was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his sixth.
The game: Neither team did much on offense until the fourth, when Koskie hit a two-out homer to put the Twins up 1-0. The Athletics had a couple of two-out singles in the sixth, but did not get on the board until the seventh, when Miguel Tejada led off with a double and Hernandez hit a one-out two-run homer, giving Oakland a 2-1 lead. It went to 3-1 in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Byrnes and Hatteberg.
The Koskie homer was the only hit the Twins had for seven innings. In the eighth, however, Dustan Mohr hit a one-out double and Doug Mientkiewicz was hit by a pitch. Kielty then pinch-hit for Luis Rivas and hit a three-run homer, giving the Twins a 4-3 advantage. The Athletics went down in order in the ninth.
WP: J. C. Romero (1-0). LP: Zito (6-4). S: Guardado (14).
Notes: Mientkiewicz returned to the lineup at first base. Denny Hocking went in to play second base after Kielty pinch-hit for Rivas.
Jacque Jones was 0-for-4, dropping his average to .335. Mohr was 1-for-3 and was batting .318. Matthew LeCroy was 0-for-3 and was batting .303.
This was Rogers' first game score over 50 in a month and his first over 60 since April 17.
Zito had four complete games in 2003. Three of them were losses, two of them to the Twins. He had only three more complete games after 2003.
The Twins had won three in a row, five of six, eight of ten, ten of thirteen, sixteen of twenty-one, and twenty of twenty-five.
Record: The Twins were 30-20, in first place in the American League Central, 3.5 games ahead of Kansas City.
FMD: Theme Weeks
So I kind of stumbled into my guest DJ week without a theme. And sometimes I feel like I've been running thin on FMD topics. So this is probably moving a bit too meta, but... this week's FMD topic for discussion is "what themes would be good for weeks of music, or FMD discussions?"!
Alice Merton – Why So Serious
I just love this song. That is all.

Kenesaw Landis, as I'm sure you know, was the first commissioner of baseball, holding the job from 1920 until his death in 1944.
Pitcher Clark Griffith was a star for the Cubs before jumping to the White Sox when the American League was formed. Later, of course, he was the owner of the Twins franchise while it was still in Washington. His adopted son, Calvin, brought the team to Minnesota.
Ron Cash was drafted by Minnesota in the sixth round in 1969, but did not sign.
Gigantes Recap: Game Four
ESCOGIDO 3, GIGANTES 1 AT ESCOGIDO
Batting star: Ronald Guzman was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Pitching stars: Dustin Crenshaw struck out six in five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk. Raynel Espinal pitched a perfect inning, striking out one. Marcos Molina pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Joe Dunand was 2-for-3 with a double. Denyi Reyes pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
The game: Escogido scored three in the first and that was all they needed. Chas McCormick singled, stole second, and scored on a Cesar Puello single. An error and a walk loaded the bases. With one out, Julio Y. Rodriguez had an RBI single and Dunand hit a sacrifice fly, making it 3-0 Escogido.
The Gigantes had a man on second with one out in the first, a man on third with one out in the second, and a man on second with one out in the sixth, but did not score. They finally got on the board in the ninth. Guzman and Rafael Lantigua started the inning with singles, bringing the tying run to the plate. A ground out and a sacrifice fly brought home one run, but they also made two outs, and a strikeout ended the game.
WP: Franklyn Kilome (1-0). LP: Crenshaw (0-1). S: Steven Wilson (1).
Notes: Lantigua is batting 1.000. Abiatal Avelino was 0-for-3 and is batting .417. Guzman is batting .375. Carlos Peguero is batting .333.
Espinal has an ERA of zero. Randy Rosario pitched a third of an inning without giving up a run and has an ERA of zero. Yunior Marte retired both men he faced and has an ERA of zero.
Gigantes manager Luis Urueta was ejected in the seventh inning. He was thrown out by the first base umpire following a walk. I don't know what the call was that prompted him to get tossed.
The Gigantes were 0-for-8 with men in scoring position. Escogido was not that much better at 2-for-11.
Record: The Gigantes are 2-2, tied for fourth with Escogido. The Toros del Este remain in first place, but are still just 1-0 due to rainouts.
Next game: Following an off day, the Gigantes host Licey on Friday.
