Game x: (name of team) @ (name of team)

Well, last night sure (went well/didn't go well). That brings our losing streak to (Graham's Number), so I guess that's at least notable.

Furthermore, it's unfortunate that (star player) got hurt when he (performed basic baseball action). I imagine the Twins training staff will call it a (minor, non-threatening injury) for a few weeks until forced to admit that is actually a (year ruining injury). Sign him up for Tommy John!

Tonight, (name of pitcher) takes the mound for the Twins, he has (colorful euphemism for "lost") his last (ω1) starts, generally through a combination of (near pathological lack of strikeouts/unhealthy obsession with giving up home runs) and (poor timing/what can only be described as "Tsutomu Yamaguchi" level bad luck). Maybe he can pull it off? More likely, his mound opponent (AAAA Scrub) will dominate our lineup. But hey, that's why they play the games on the field.

Game 85: Twins at Rangers

Just past the halfway point of the season (2nd half started on Monday).

Following the win against Oakland last night, this is the first time all year the Twins have won back-to-back series' and (courtesy of socal) only the second time they've managed to avoid losing multiple games in a row. I'll go out on a limb and say that there is very little chance for this team to climb back into contention, but a couple of bright spots:
-They don't hold the worst record in baseball (ATL is 28-57).
-Over his past 5 starts, Ervin Santana is 2-1, with a 2.76 ERA and 20 K's - 5 BB in 32.2 innings of work (including a complete game, 2-hit shutout last night against Oakland).
-After an atrocious offensive April & May, Brian Dozier has managed to pull himself up to a respectable .252/.336/.456 and leads the team with a 1.8 WAR.
-Over 44 games with the team, Robbie Grossman is batting .281/.420/.473 (and, though short of the req'd AB's, leads the team in OPS and OPS+) ... plus, an outfielder playing in the outfield!!!one111

Tonight, we'll see if young Mr. Duffey can build on his 8-Inning, 2 Hit, 1 Run performance in New York last week, and add another W to his team-leading 4 Wins.

For those interested (and out of market I presume) MLB.TV's free game of the day.

2016 Game 81: Rangers at Twins

First Pitch 1:10 pm

Kyle Gibson (1-5, 5.12 ERA, 29 K, 1.489 WHIP)
Cole Hamels (9-1, 2.60 ERA, 102 K, 1.206 WHIP)

Today's tilt marks the midway point in a season that many Twins players and fans would just as soon forget about. As such there's not a lot to say about the rest of the season. It probably can't be any worse than the first half, and it just might get better. So here's a toss away random thoughts game log just like the professionals write when they don't have a decent idea for a column.

  • Max Kepler had himself a banner day at the ballpark yesterday, knocking two home runs and driving in seven, a Twins RBI record for a rookie, in the 17-run crushing of Texas. Tony Oliva, Miguel Sano and Oswaldo Arcia each have a 6-RBI game as rookies.
  • Miguel Sano is looking good since coming off the disabled list, blasting a two-run homer and driving in a total of three runs yesterday.
  • Eduardo Nunuz got in on the offensive fun yesterday with a four-hit game that included a sacrifice fly.
  • Eduardo Escobar is listed as day to day after injuring his left hamstring sliding into home plate yesterday.
  • Down on the farm, Jose Berrios takes the mound for Rochester today as he tries to extend a streak of scoreless starts to three. The Red Wings play Syracuse at 6:05 pm (MiLB.TV)
  • The Braves and Marlins will play each other today in front of 12,500 service personnel  at Fort Bragg, the largest US military base in the world. I appreciate MLB's support of our military and while I sometimes feel they've become a PR wing of the Pentagon, this is a very nice beau geste.
  • After his first week in the major leagues with the Mets, my friends' son Brandon Nimmo is slashing .286/.310/.393/.703. I watched the Mets-Cubs game on TV last night; Nimmo went 1-3 with a walk and run scored.

It's way too nice outside not be at a ballgame today, so I snagged some Legends Club seats on StubHub and the wife and I are going to the game.

Play ball!
