April 25, 2011: Fumbling Toward Respectability
The Twins come into the off day with three straight wins and we're starting to see a light at the end of the injury tunnel. I have to admit I was getting scared there.
Happy Birthday–April 25

Game #21: Twins 4, Indians 3
Twins Record: 9-12
Fangraphs
MLB Game Wrap
If the Twins had somehow lost this one, I was seriously considering whipping up a Downfall parody video in which ol' Adolph would have cursed the days of birth of Alexi Casilla, Steve Liddle, and whichever pitcher ended up coughing up the lead. Thankfully I can save that one in the DK Box of Tricks for some later date.
Things are starting to look up (he says, hopefully). First series win of the season; first series sweep (basically) of the season. The offense is starting to pick up; Thome made contact today that sounded like it deserved eight total bases, but only got three. Meanwhile, Pavano keeps on Pavanoing. Next stop: .500 (he says, again, hopefully).
Hitter of the Week: Jason Kubel
Pitcher of the Week: You think, when a guy gives up zero runs, only one walk, and strikes out nine, I'm going to give it to anyone else? It's again yours, Scott Baker.
Game 21: Indians at Twins
Time: 1:10 CDT
TV: FSN
Radio: TRN, XM 179
Starting Pitchers: Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 4.85 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) vs. Carl Pavano (1-2, 5.47, 1.22).
Saturday's outburst was great, but it's about time for the Twins to win a series and no better time to do it than against the team in first place. The aged Twins need to give the upstart Indians their comeuppance.
The Twins are now 4-0 in Brian Duensing's starts an 4-12 the other days. That trend needs to be remedied (not the Duensing part, of course).
It also would be nice to finally get a three-game win streak and ensure the White Sox are in last place for at least one more day. Go Twins!!!!1111!!!
A Happy Easter Recipe
A sweet little side dish recipe to go with your Easter dinner today.
One of my oldest and bestest friends from Spamtown is a first-generation American of Greek heritage (or, actually, generation 1.5; his dad immigrated around the time of the Greek civil war; his mom was native-born) . His family founded the legendary George's Pizza.
Mmmm, greasy pizza cut into little squares. Heaven on earth. And Uncle Dino's Gondola truly was the "Noblest Sandwich of Them All."
One of my treasured possessions is a wedding gift from George and Ethel T (you are both missed), Popular Greek Recipes, published by The Ladies of the Philoptochos Society, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Charleston SC. I've used this cookbook a lot over the years. It is my go-to recipe place for satziki, avgolemono soup, mousaka, pastichio, and today's recipe, fasoulakia yiahni, string beans in tomato sauce.
I will start with a faithful rendition of the recipe (p.186), then discuss modifications below.

April 24, 2011: Smoke-Out
I quit smoking nine years ago today, after smoking a pack a day for nine years. Hardest and best thing I ever did for myself.
