Loading... Man, the international break can be killer sometimes. You get such riveting matchups as Slovakia-Armenia and Finland-Moldova. More than anything I just feel bad for the San Marinos and Faroe Islands of the bunch who are mostly just trotted out to slaughter. One thing I might suggest is a two-tiered Euros. In rugby there is the Six Nations, comprised of the European rugby powers, and there's the European Nations Cup for teams 7-12.

This is just kind of a wrap-up post of various thoughts on the Twins minor league teams and players. I claim no particular credentials as either an analyst or a scout, so feel free to disagree with anything that follows.
--You can understand why Rochester management is getting upset with the Twins. I know the minors are about player development, but you'd still like to be able to field a competitive team. Given how bad they've been the last two years, attendance hasn't suffered as much as you might think--the Red Wings were ninth out of fourteen teams, with an average of 6493 fans. All the injuries to the major league club obviously played a part in how bad the team was, but a failure to develop players has also played a part.
About Last Month (err...two months ago)
Again, I'll start by talking about the last post. There is an observation for the first problem that makes it much easier that nobody seemed to pick up on. If you are to apply one of the moves twice, it's the same as not doing it at all! It's clear that this is true if you immediately apply the second move after the first, but even if you apply other moves in between, it won't make a difference. If you want, see if this observation will help you solve the problem, otherwise, I'll finish the solution after the break!

I spent yesterday with several drunken NFL fans at a bar. There was a conflict that saw an employee choke out a customer and drag him out by his legs, then get fired for overstepping his bounds (though the customer, who was yelling sexist and hateful epithets, had it coming and the place cheered his removal). I haven't had an average day here yet.
To fulfill the promise I made many months ago to program a week full of MOR indie guitar rock, I kick off my term at the helm with the Portland-based band Menomena.

Consisting until recently of Justin Harris, Brent Knopf, and Danny Seim (as well as additional guitarist Joe Haege in these videos), Menomena recorded their 2010 album Mines by reportedly emailing each other recorded bits and pieces that they then pieced together and sent back to each other, never actually recording anything in each others' presence because they hate each other so much or something. The above song, sung by Harris, was performed at KEXP radio in Seattle on 7/28/10. Please head beyond the jump for more.

Yeah, pork chops for Dr. Chop. Tonight I tried to tackle pan fired pork medallions with a white wine and lemon sauce. I say that I tried to tackle this dish because this time I fell a little bit short. The recipe calls for pork tenderloin cut into 1/2 inch medallions, pounded slightly flatter with the back of a frying pan, shallow pan fried with a light breading. I accomplished a nice crust on the meat, but unfortunately I slightly overcooked the meat which means a slightly tougher final product. The sauce is pretty much tolbert proof which is a good thing. You'll need the following:
1 - 1 1/2 pounds of pork tenderloin, cut into 1/2 inch thick round (place medallions between two pieces of wax paper and pound flat with the back of a frying pan to an even thickness)
1/4 cup olive oil
Flour for dredging, seasoned liberally with salt and pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
Juice from one lemon
2 tbs drained capers (optional)
Method: Heat oil in a frying pan until a sprinkle of flour sizzles. Place medallions in the oil and fry to a golden brown, turn over to brown the other side. The meat should sizzle well, but the oil shouldn't smoke adjust heat as necessary. Total cooking time shouldn't exceed 5 minutes, no really, trust me. Cook the pork in shifts making sure not to crowd the pan. Once you're finished cooking the meat drain the fat from the pan. Add the wine to the pan and return to medium / medium high heat. Once the wine has nearly evaporated add the lemon juice and capers, and pour pan sauce over the pork and serve with wedges of lemon.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the wine and lemon sauce, but wasn't overwhelmed. I quickly threw together a green salad and roasted some russets with a little onion and garlic to serve on the side.
Ten years ago last week, we moved into our current home. I know this because 10 years ago today I was waiting for my DirecTV to be installed when my wife called to tell me to turn on the radio. I may have been the last person in the country to know about the Twin Towers. Let's honor those who lost their lives and celebrate those who survived and helped others survive and maybe share a few of our own memories of that day. As for the game ...
Scott Diamond vs. Doug Fister
Maybe the Twins can fist it off Fister, but I won't be holding my breath.
Diamond had the benefit of unfamiliarity against the Tigers in his last start against them. I don't expect it to go so well the second time. Then again, he did better against the White Sox the second time around, so you never know.
Normally, this would be a great doubleheader day with the Twins scheduled to start about three hours before a certain other Minnesota team kicks off its season (literally). It's really sad that for decades the Twins have tried to surpass the Vikings in popularity and even with two world championships, they still haven't done it. However, they had a golden opportunity to get a leg up on the Vikes, who bumbled through a controversial and disappointing season while the Twins were coming off a wonderful 94-win debut season for spectacular Target Field. All the Twins did was puke all over that field and their fans while the Vikings traded for Donovan McNabb and signed their most popular player to a 7-year, $100 million contract, with only just over a third of it guaranteed.
