Game 4: Indians 7, Twins 2

The big news from this game was that Mike Pelfrey hit the wall hard in the sixth. Of course, it really began before that since all the balls in play in the early innings were on ground balls and that changed to fly balls later, which is a bad sign for a guy relying exclusively on a sinker.

Of course, what should the Twins expect when he never went more than 4 IP in a spring training game. The Twins really coddle pitchers in spring training. They also have a history of struggling in April under Gardenhire. The two may not be unrelated.

Still, the final line for Pelfrey was 5 1/3 innings and 3 ER allowed. A team with a strong bullpen or a strong offense should win a lot of games win they get that from their starter. Unfortunately, the Twins had neither on Friday. The offense disappeared after the first inning and Fien and Thielbar were terrible.

The only real positives were Dozier getting 3 hits after starting the season looking clueless and a home run and a wicked line drive with two RISP for Colabello. It's too early to draw conclusions, but I like what I see from Colabello. He's pretty much guaranteed himself a spot in the lineup against lefties and has already had a couple starts against righties. He'll make sure that Willingham and Kubel have to hit to stay in the lineup.

Game 5 – Twins at Clevelanders 2: The Gibsoning

Kyle Gibson and the Twins take on Carlos Carrasco and the Clevelanders. Carrasco has, to this point, seemed like the type of pitcher that the Twins could have success against (a righty who doesn't strike out a ton of people and a ground ball pitcher who seems let the ball find the seats with regularity). Meanwhile, Kyle Gibson's had a rough start to his major league career, but that all ends now, I'm sure.

2014 Game 1: Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox

Opening Day. Just remember what A. Bartlett Giamatti said. This game is meant to break your heart.

Today the Minnesota Twins baseball club will challenge the Chicago White Sox team to commence the 2014 Major League Baseball regular season. Leave us not have illusions about what the Twins can reasonably pull off this year, but leave us neither let that temper our enjoyment of the game and the team we love.

Today the Twins send Ricky Nolasco to the mound as their Opening Day starter. The White Sox counter with Chris Sale. Both pitchers enter the season undefeated, so it should be an evenly matched contest.

Play ball!

2013 Game 162: At Long Last

...our most recent nightmare of a season is ending. A guy I've never heard of is doing the catching, which should tell you how engaged I've been. Ubaldo faces Scott Diamond. The Indians have won nine in a row and I can't imagine they'll be taking this opportunity to lose, what with that whole Wild Card going on. The Indians fought their way into the field but now might even host the play-in game against the Rays or Rangers. How long has it been since the Central pulled down a Wild Card spot? 2006, maybe? I should probably know this, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I suppose I'll at least turn this on while keeping an eye on other games. They're the only Twins we have, and this is it for six months.

Thanks for another season, guys. Let's win this one to improve upon last season! If these trends continue, this team could be competitive by 2025.
