Game 125 — Twins at Hosers

Twins in the beginning of a long stretch of games against sub-500 teams, with very few teams more sub-500 than the Chicago White Sox. The third game of a rare five game tilt against the Pale Hose has Gibby once again trying to get keep the Twins in the playoff hunt. Lucas Giolito up for the Sox. He’s one of the prospects received in the Adam Eaten trade last December and the apparently the Southsiders want to see what they got.

This will be featured in my upcoming Father Knows Best posting but the eldest now has a real job working for Guaranteed Rate Mortgage in Chicago, ironically enough 5 blocks from Wrigley Field. I am hoping that next year we can secure some sweet stadium sponsor tix and I will go down and check out “New Comisky.” Until then I will be enjoying the view of Guaranteed Rate Field from my Barcalounger.

The first game of a proper doubleheader features Yet Another New Twins Pitcher™, this time Tim Melville. I'm somewhat surprised that Mitch Garver, who presumably knows Melville better than Castro or Gimenez, will be playing first base instead of crouching behind the dish. Starting Garver at catcher would've spelled Gimenez, who caught yesterday, and allowed Vargas to start at first this afternoon and Castro to start behind the plate tonight. Instead, Gimenez is catching again today. That's not a sign of confidence in Garver's defensive capabilities.

Game 68 — Pale Hose v. Twins

We all saw it coming didn't we? Twins playing above their heads and the Clevelanders scuffling. Regression to the mean was inevitable, especially given the pitching staff the Twins had planned.

But nothing fixes what ails you than a 3 game stint against the lowly White Sox. Let's hope the Twins keep Hawk quiet for innings at a time as Santana gets back on track. Beautiful night for a 7:10p game.

Game 30: Twins v. White Sox

Oh it’s real now Twins fans.  Joe Mauer is angry* about getting the short end of a bad called third strike.  American League pitchers couldn’t stop Miguel Sano, so they petitioned MLB to sit him for a day.  Stalwarts like Danny Santana, Kyle Gibson, and Michael Tonkin unceremoniously dumped by the whippersnappers in the front office.  Plus, Twins hides still chapped from the spanking the Red Sox put on them over the weekend.  Yes, these Twins are just loaded for bear, looking to take it on someone, anyone.  Who better than the White Sox, those southside ne-er do wells, home of disco demolition day and the Ligue family?

Wait there’s more you say?  Mike Pelfrey is pitching for the Whities?  Big Pelf?  The Dude who had a 35.6 ERA and -14.1 WAR** during his short stay with the Twins?   Bring. It. On.  I foresee the Twins batting around twice before the 4th inning as all those frustrations ooze out of the visitor dugout.  Tonight will be one cathartic primal scream where Brian Buxton’s batting average moves from .165 to .180, Max Kepler creates a fourth law of White Sox ass kicking, and Hector Santiago strikes out the side on seven pitches.  Paul Molitor may even only use 3 pitchers tonight instead of the usual 7 or 8.  I call this a Teri Hatcher game (It’s going to be real and it’s going to be spectacular).  So sit back and enjoy the festivities.

Game 10. Twins host Chicago. 7:10pm

Could there be a weather delay? The radar as of this writing looks like its possible.

The Twins are  6-3 and tied for first place! Adalberto Mejia starts for the locals. I saw him in spring training a few times (on FSN, not in Florida) he looked impressive, throwing strikes and working quick. His first regular season start was not as impressive only getting 5 outs. Maybe it was first start of the regular season jitters.

The Sox are 4-4 and in 3rd place. Dylan Covey start and it his major league debut.

I have been rewatching Star Trek Deep Space Nine and found my favorite Worf joke ever (Of course Worf was a character in Next Generation too) It happened in an episode where the crew plays a baseball game against the Vulcans in the Holosuite and its one of my favorite non serious episode of any Star Trek series. (Most Star Trek series are available to binge on Netflix)

After a sweep of the Royals at home, the Twins head east to play the White Sox. The Sox  got a new sponsor name for their stadium but I don't recall what it is so I will call it Comiskey Park.

The Sox had a rain out and sit at 1-1 on the season. Twins are tied for first with a 3-0 record.Phil Hughes toes the rubber for the visitors while newcomer Derek Holland starts for the Pale Hose.

Weather should not be a problem, with cloudy and cool tonight and a warmup in Chicago for the weekend.

Game 134: White Sox At Twins

Tonight's game features the Twins best starter* of 2016 - Ervin Santana (6-10, 3.54 ERA, 118 ERA+, 1.201 WHIP) who, in pitching for a bad team, is 4-3 in his past 7 starts (49 IP, 13 ER's, 11BB:40K, 2.39 ERA, with an average of 4 runs of support) including a 2-0 loss to Atlanta on July 26, and a 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Aug 21.

The Twins offense will see Jose Quintana, quietly(?) having the best year of his career (11-9, 2.77 ERA, 147 ERA+, 1.103 WHIP). Quintana, also pitching for a (pretty) bad team, is also 4-3 in his past 7 starts (48.2 IP's, 10 ER's, 8BB:38K, 1.85 ERA, also with an average of 4 runs of support).

Based on the remarkable similarity of their results over their past 7 starts, tonight could be a very fun game if you like pitching.

The Twins are 2-2 against Quintana this season, losing their first two meetings, but beating him on June 28th & July 29th (though he recorded 8 & 9 SO's in those games respectively).

-The Twins are 49-84 (6 wins behind their Pythagorean projected 55-79) and are on pace for 102 losses.
-60-102 would tie their worst W-L% since moving to Minnesota - their 1982 record.**
-A loss tonight ties the Twins longest losing streak of 14 games, set between May 19 - June 2, 1982. (The Senators lost 18 consecutive games at least four times: 1903, '04, '48 & '59.)
-Thankfully, they've got a ways to go to catch the '88 Orioles at 21 games lost in a row, or the modern-era-leading 1961 Phillies with a 23 game losing streak.

On a more positive note, highlighted by dw early this morning, Dozier has accumulated 5.4 WAR*** this year, and at 2.5 WAR so far, Joe Mauer is only .6 WAR behind Kirby Puckett on the Twins career WAR list at 50.3, good for 6th all time.

*No other Twins starter has an ERA below 5, though reliever Ryan Pressly is 6-6 with a 3.65 ERA in 62 games
