Game 107: Twins @ Red Sox

Time is running out for Ben Revere. If he's going to hit an honest-to-God over the fence homerun, you'd have to figure it'd be here or New Yankee bandbox. The problem, of course, is that in his entire career, he's only hit four balls in the air out of the infield. Things look grim, but this is the ballpark that has walls just over 300 feet from the plate (seems gimmicky, but I've been assured that it's not) If he really got into one, and the wind was blowing out at about 30 miles an hour, and the fielder Canseco'd it, he might have a shot.

Cole DeVries takes the ball for the good guys today. I've mentioned it before, but I really thought that when DeVries was sent back down that first time that he was gone for good. Instead, he's pretty much become our second best starter. I like his strikeouts, such as they are*, I love his walk rate, if he can figure out how to avoid throwing two or three BP fastballs every single game, I'd be good with him the rest of the way. Good Lord, though, those home runs... he gets grounders on fewer than a third of the balls hit in play, and a full 15.8% of those fly balls leave the playing field. If he keeps this up, I don't know how we're going to be able to rely on him come playoffs.

Clay Buchholz is also pitching, but he's a thoroughly mediocre pitcher, and no one cares about him.

* Fun Fact: At 6.2 k/9, DeVries has the highest rate of any of our starters (including injured ones), and the third highest strikeout rate of any pitchers who are still with the team who have pitched more than 15 innings this year. How is that even possible??

So the Pale Hosers are leading the AL Central and the Twins are, mercifully, out of the cellar at last (thank you very much Kansas City, Cleveland with the assist). We'd all like that situation to be reversed, of course. After all, the White Sox are to the Twins as Jesus Quintana is to The Dude -- a perverse, repugnant arch-nemesis with nary a redeeming quality who nevertheless demands a miniscule measure of grudging respect. I'd like nothing better than to have the kind of starting pitching that the Sox have enjoyed this year. But sometimes you just have to roll the balls that life gives you and hope it's enough to give the pins a good stir.

Well it was another day of ups and downs, just another day in the life of a big leaguer! We had a game today and I was the starter, and I think I played pretty good. Coach Gardenhire said "great job out there kiddo heck of a game" so I think he's finally coming around on me :-). I'm starting to be more confident around him but I still don't like to make him upset. I gave up only one run but it was another home run and Coach Gardenhire says I gotta be careful with those because they can really bite you. He was pretty angry after the game but it wasn't at me it was mostly at Alex. But I still remember when Alex told me the other day to go back to triple a with all the other ******* so it was funny to hear him get yelled at for once lol .

Dad and Janelle were at the game and so were Mom and Scott. I don't know if they sat near each other but I guess Kaycie was sitting with Mom. She probably wasn't watching when I got my strikeouts, she was probably doing facebook. She is still such a brat but she's going into high school soon so maybe she will grow up finally.

Nicole was at the game too! (I told you about Nicole last week) I guess Brian invited her and she sat with his friend Trish. I don't know Trish but I know Brian and the girls he's frinds with so I hope she didn't give Nicole the wrong idea about me. Brian kept giving me a hard time in the dugout and pointing to their seats and being his randy self lol. Sometimes idk about Brian but he's the nicest to me of all the guys.

All in all it was a mixed day. I pitched pretty good but we didn't get the win, and we are still fighting for the playoffs here. A W would have been nice but at least I didn't get the L (lol take that Alex). We just need to keep battling our tails off and we'll get them next time, that's what Coach Gardenhire always says. And I wish I got to see Nicole tonight be we are already on the road to Kansas City so it will have to wait :-(! Sometimes this big league life is crazy but I wouldn't trade it for any other. Until next time guys,

Game 87: Twins and A’s

Coles De Vries takes the ball for the Twins tonight. I could have absolutely sworn when he was sent back to Rochester the first time that we'd seen the last of him. However, as it turns out, he's been pretty persistent, and here he is making his sixth start. He's rapidly becoming a semi-fixture in the rotation, and the fact that he's the second pitcher starting off the post-All Star break seems to imply that he might be here a while.

Is that a good thing? I suppose if we had an ideal major league roster, a 5.17 FIP (4.37 xFIP) wouldn't get my heart all aflutter, but looking over some of the rest of the rotation - Duensing (who I wish would just get left alone in the bullpen), Hendriks (is he still with us? It's always so hard to tell), Blackburn (I know he's not in the majors, but you know it won't be long...) - it's hard to say that he's the first person I'd drop.

The A's are sending out Tommy Milone, who's gotten decent results in his rookie season, but seems to be pretty heavily built up by a super low walk rate. If the Twins can hit some line drives, he'll be toast, and De Vries can pick up his third win. Not bad for someone I figured would be kicking it in Rochester for the remainder of his career.

2012 Game 85: Twins at Rangers

For some reason, the Twins merit one of the two late games tonight, so here's hoping we can enjoy three innings of Twins baseball before we all inevitably switch over to the much more important and intriguing Yankees-Red Sox game. Cole DeVries, who has a last name that is pronounced annoyingly, faces Roy Oswalt, who also has a last name that's pronounced annoyingly. And the similarities don't stop there! Actually, they probably do.

It hasn't been much of a first half, but I'll agree with other Citizens of late...it isn't like last year, where the team looked directionless and pathetic in the second half, and it hasn't become a chore to watch my favorite team play my favorite sport. Though they're behind last year's pace by a game or two, this team isn't likely to once again put up a historically awful final couple of months leading into a 99-loss campaign.

Thanks for another enjoyable half-season of game logs, Citizens, and SBG: as always, thanks for making this community possible. Bring this one home, gents. I have a night shift that will rob me of my rightful Sunday ballgame.

Go Twins.

I can't believe I pitched in the majore league last night. THE MAJOR LEAGUE. So many people told me to give up on baseball because it wasn't a realistic dream. But now I am pitching for the Minnesota Twins (HI HATERS!).

I guess it could have gone better tho. It was a tough loss. I didn't want to start my career 0-1 but there are so many great pitchers who lost their first games, like Nolan Ryan and Brad Radke. And they are in the hall of fame. So if I want to be in the hall of fame too then losoing my first game is actually a pretty good place to start lol!

All of the guys were nice to me even tho I lost. I was nervous about talking with Coach Gardenhire after the game but he said it was bad luck because of the errors. I guess he didn't see all the home runs I gave up lol. But he told me that I wasn't going to be sent down yet and so it was a good meeting overall. And some of the guys took me out to the bar afterwards to celebrate being in the bigs. It was pretty fun to hang out with P.J. and Brian as major leaguers! Brian kept talking about girls and saying how they love the Twins uniform even more than the "triple-A sk*nks " as he put it, but I didn't have much luck lol. Joe and Justin showed up for a few minutes which surprised me because those guys are stars and I didn't know what they were doing hanging out with a bum like me lol, but Justin bought me a bud light and said sorry they couldn't get me a win. I was like lmao you hit two homeruns you were doing all you could!

All in all it was a mixed day. It was good to wear the uniform and pitch in a MLB game but we can't keep taking tough losses like that because the games in May count just as much as the games in September and we are fighting to get to the playoffs. But I can't wait to take the mound again and get my first W!
