Happy Birthday–August 12
Christy Mathewson (1880)
Ray Schalk (1892)
Harlond Clift (1912)
Fred Hutchinson (1919)
Bob Buhl (1928)
Kevin Cooney (1950)
Matt Clement (1974)
Lew Ford (1976)
A notoriously bad hitter, even for a pitcher, Bob Buhl had a lifetime average of .089 and went the entire 1962 season without getting a hit (0-for-70). Oddly, he equaled his career high in walks that year with six, which goes to show something or other.
Kevin Cooney was an eleventh round draft choice of the Twins in 1972. He pitched in the Twins’ organization for two seasons, then a shoulder injury ended his playing career. He then became a college baseball coach. He was the head coach at Montclair State from 1984-1987 and at Florida Atlantic from 1988-2008.
We would like to wish a happy birthday to MagUidhir's niece and nephew.
August 12, 2017: Bulldozed…?
The Twins are taking part in a nickname promotion across the league. One player will be wearing a jersey that says "BULLDOZE." This player is...Hector Santiago.
Game 114. Twins at Detroit.
Sweeping the season series against Milwaukee has done wonders for playoff positioning as the Twins find themselves back to within striking distance of winning an AL Central title. Riding a season high 5 game win streak, the Twins are 3 .5 games behind Cleveland and .5 games back in the Wild Car slot (but who really wants a WC spot? I want Titles!)
The pitching matchup is a battle of mediocrity. Kyle Gibson goes for us, Anibal Sanchez for the Tigers.
Joe Mauer has been walking some more lately and has brought his BB/K ratio to 50/54. A week ago it was 45/54. Wek Mauer is getting on base, the Twins have a better chance of winning. Im sticking to that theory!

FMD 2017-08-11: 78 RPM
In this morning's daily genealogy email that I receive was a link to an open source project that is archiving recordings from 78rpm records:

I got back into listening to 78s over 15 years ago when listening to Radio Dismuke on Live365. It's not something I can to for long periods of time, but it is a neat change of pace for my listening.
I remember my father had a small collection of 78s -- a few of them were comedies, including I think Cohen on the Telephone.
Do you have any experience with listening to 78s? Whether you have or not, post up your ten here...
2017/08/11 FMD: Great 78s
Per Rhu_Ru, here's a collection of thousands of 78rpm records and cylinder recordings released in the early 20th century. Could be a deep rabbit hole.
On that topic, what are some of your favorite old-timey recordings? I'm guessing CH has a few in mind. Can't say I have a lot myself, though I was always partial to Mississippi John Hurt.
Minor Details: Games of August 10
A strong AAA debut for Stephen Gonsalves. Glen Perkins pitches a good inning in his rehab assignment. Tyler Watson struggles. Akil Baddoo keeps hitting. Six walks and a balk, all in the ninth, sink the GCL Twins. Fredderi Soto pitches well in the DSL.
