Game 111: Twins @ Cleveland

So, now they're back to using position players as pitchers? But what about that nine man bullpen? In 20 1/3 innings over the last four games, 11 relievers have combined to allow 15 runs. After a stretch of games where the pitching was good enough to win some but the offense was nowhere to be seen, we've now had stretch where the pitching, both starters and relievers, are regressing while the offense is ... well ... improving.

Hopefully today, Phil Hughes (10-7, 4.14 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) is able to keep the ball in the park, pitch deep into the game, and get some offense from his offense.

His offense will be facing the reigning Cy Young winner in Corey Kluber (6-12, 3.60 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) who with 32 BB's 176 K's over 162.2 innings this year will, in all likelihood, strike out about a dozen Twins hitters today. In his last four games against Minnesota, he's 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA with 37 K's over 31 1/3 innings. Perhaps interspersed with those strikeouts will be some hits...hopefully?

Game 109 Twins at Cleveland. 6pm

The last few years have seen the Twins free fall into the abyss after the All Star break. I would say it was one of the main reasons Ron Gardenhire lost his job. Can Paul Molitor steady the ship and avoid another 90 loss season?

Perhaps I am being too over dramatic. But getting bullied and bludgeoned by  the Blue Jays the past week has brought up memories of years past. Limping in the Dog Days of Summer and then the Twins being out of the sports picture once football season starts is not the way I wanted this season to go.

The Twins will face the Clevelanders who traded away Nick Swisher and Micheal Bourn to Atlanta. Mike "Do we have to keep watching him pitch?" Pelfey throws for our guys. Cody Anderson throws for the other guys.

2015 Game 108: Twins at Blue Jays

At the game marking the two-thirds point of the season, the Twins hope to stop regressing to the mean and start acting like the team that outplayed expectations throughout most of the first half. My ability to watch this team has been minimal since the All-Star Game thanks to scheduling luck and bad situations, and tonight will be no different, but here's hoping I don't come back to learn that the team has dipped to .500 for the first time in months.

Kyle Gibson, a solid but unpredictable starter, faces Mark Buehrle, whose year-by-year statistics are so predictable you can nearly set a watch to him. Outside of the better laundry he's essentially unchanged from when the Twins saw him on the regular, so that's who they face today.

Okay, Twins. Let's stick around the Wild Card race for a while.

Game 106: Twins @ Blue Jays

Hughes (10-6, 4.11 ERA, 4.19 xFIP) vs. Estrada (8-6, 3.53 ERA, 4.62 xFIP)

With the way the post-ASB has gone, I'm finding myself falling into the depths of ambivalence. It feels like, as in year's past, this is when the team regresses. I keep trying to remind myself that they started the year off pretty terribly as well. But, the recent struggles of Glen Perkins has me concerned that it just isn't gonna happen. That's the guy I never really consider for someone who will have a run of crappiness.

Anywho, there are still games to be played. With Estrada's xFIP being over a full run higher than his ERA, let's hope the offense doesn't Price-ify him like they've been doing. Gotta get those runners in from third! Especially with Hughes having a HR year and the Blue Jays seeming to be fond of the long ball.

2015 Game 105: Minnesota Twins vs. Toronto Blue Jays

DAY GAME ALERT!

Good evening gentle ladies and sirs, and welcome to the Queen City, the pride of Ontario, Toronto the Good. After stumbling through 3-6 homestand, the Twins visit O, Canada for the first time since June of last year.

Minnesota's been historically lousy in Toronto, but they've played well against the AL East this year. As the Twins are only one game up on the Jays for the 2nd WC spots, this series has some significance. Taking the mound tonight will be the PEDestroyer, Ervin Santana, trying to bounce back from his first loss of the season. Facing off will be some schmo named David Price, who will be making his debut in the Blue Jays uniform. So, you know, no real point in the watching this game.

Game 104: Seattle at Minnesota

Trevor May comes out of the pen and gets the W on a walk-off single by Kurt Suzuki after the winning run is intentionally walked ... never thought I'd utter that phrase, especially considering how the fellas have been playing of late. Oh, BTW, it was all started by Miguel Sano's double on the first pitch of the 9th. SO. MUCH. FUN. ... oh yeah, there's a game today.

Today's matchup features two starters I didn't think would still be with their respective clubs after the non-waiver trade deadline.
Hisashi Iwakuma: 5.10 ERA, 2-2, 37k's, 1.26 WHIP
-v-
Mike Pelfrey: 3.92 ERA, 5-7, 53 k's, 1.46 WHIP (3-7 in his last 10 with his ERA rising nearly 1.5 runs, but only averaging 3.2 ER's per start during that span... only.)
