2011 Twins Game Recaps

Game 128 – Orioles 8, Twins 1

Another Twins game, another brutal loss. Tonight they were murdered by accused murderer manslaughterer Alfredo Simon and the mighty 49-77 Orioles. JJ Hardy reminded us again how stupid that trade was. I imagine the rest of the season will continue to be like watching a dog take a dump in your lawn in slow motion. Only 34 more games to go, then we can start counting down towards Spring Training and the beginning of next season when the Twins will finally be at .500 again.

Minor Details: Games of 8/22

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 11, Rochester 2 in Rochester (completion of suspended game).  The Yankees scored five in the third and five in the fifth.  Brandon Roberts singled and doubled.  Chase Lambin and Aaron Bates each had two hits.  Jason Repko hit a two-run homer for the only Red Wings runs.  Jake Stevens took over the pitching and surrendered nine runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks in 2.1 innings, striking out four.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 9, Rochester 4 in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (seven innings--regularly scheduled game).  The Yankees scored six in the fourth.  Rene Rivera had two doubles.  Jason Repko and Aaron Bates each singled and doubled, with Bates raising his average to .311.  Andrew Baldwin yielded six runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

Reading 7, New Britain 3 in New Britain.  The Phillies scored four in the first and it was all they needed.  Chris Herrmann singled and doubled.  Evan Bigley and Mark Dolenc each had two hits.  Blake Martin surrendered six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.  Matt Schuld worked 3.1 scoreless innings, giving  up two hits and a walk, and Steve Hirschfeld threw two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.  The loss drops the Rock Cats to two games out of the last playoff spot.

Ft. Myers.  No games scheduled.

Quad Cities 5, Beloit 4 in Quad Cities (12 innings).  The Snappers led 4-3 after three; the River Bandits scored in the eighth to tie it and in the twelfth to win it.  Cody Stanley homered off Bart Carter to end the game.  Adam Bryant singled and doubled.  Wang-wei Lin, Tyler Grimes, and Jhonatan Arias each had two hits.  Lance Ray hit a two-run homer, his fourteenth.  Ryan O'Rourke allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk in five innings.  Jose Gonzalez gave up one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings.  Carter gave up the game-ending homer in his second inning of work.

Bristol 5, Elizabethton 4 in Bristol.  The Twins were down 4-0 after three, tied it with a three-run seventh, and lost in the bottom of the ninth.  Jairo Rodriguez had three hits.  JaDamion Williams, Rory Rhodes, and Niko Goodrum each had two hits.  Derek Christensen allowed four runs on three hits and a walk in four innings, striking out five.  Corey Williams took the loss, giving up a run on a hit and two walks in 2.1 innings.

GCL Twins 12, Rays 3 at Rays.  The Twins scored three in the second and five in the third to take an 8-0 lead.  Phillip Chapman had three singles and a double, raising his average to .326.  Javier Pimentel had two singles and a homer, driving in four.  Jorge Polanco had two singles and a triple.  Drew Leachman had two doubles.  Stephen Wickens singled and doubled.  Joshua Hendricks had two hits.  Starter Angel Mata pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Nick Cicio got the win with two perfect innings, striking out two.

2011 Game 127: Mauers w/Pauers at P*ssy Single Hitters

Tonight, the Twins get to take on somebody their own size for a change. The O's are a sad 47-77, on pace for 101 losses per coolstandings.com.

Pitching matchup:
Zach Jeremy Britton for the O's (scheduled; he's coming off the 15-day DL, although it was for a strain in his non-pitching shoulder)
Carl Pavanostache for the Twins.

Bal'more is tied with Minnesota and Seattle for having used the most position players this season (35 different players have had PA), but they've gotten much better offensive production out of all that deck-chair shuffling (team OPS+ of 99, compared to 85 for the Twinkies).

On the bright side, the O's pitching staff leads the AL in HR allowed by a wide margin (157; Twins are tied for second at 130) and is last in the AL in "defensive efficiency" according to b-r (Twins are two rungs higher). So I'm rooting for a slugfest. How long has it been since Jimbo had a three-HR game??

(oh, and that Wieters guy? He's hitting 261/319/404 with 12 HRs and 69:32 K:BB in 426 PA, compared to Joe's 288/350/352, 1 HR and 33:23 in 277; so I suppose you could say that the moniker kind of fits this season)

If you like to cook but don't own Mr. Bittman's book How to Cook Everything I highly recommend purchasing a copy. Bittman's writing style is clear, not overly overwhelmingly pretentious, and the directions are a simple to follow as you'll find in any cook book. In the introduction, Mark Bittman states that at any given time less than half of the adult population in the US know how to cook. At one time the extent of my culinary knowledge included how to make blue box mac'n'cheese and Schwan's frozen chicken patties. At some point I decided that I needed to expand my horizons, and started trying to cook things that I enjoyed eating out. I was mostly a blind man walking in the forest until I stole a copy of the better homes and gardens cook book from my ma and pa, and from there learned that once I knew how basic ingredients worked together I could adapt and change recipes on the fly. Over the course of the next year I'm setting out to make a big Sunday dinner from How to Cook Everything, and yesterday I made Puerto Rican Adobo Pork Roast, roasted potatoes, and green beans.
