Game 143 Recap: Pale Hose at The Bullseye

Twins Record 59-84 ---->.5 games into the cellar. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

King of the Savers race update: Craig Kimbrel and Dancie McDouche are knotted atop the leader board with 42 saves apiece. As was noted during the game log the Twins are perfect in converting saves since firing Shortening from the traditional closer role. Small, moral victories are still victories.

Wow. The Twins stink. No, really, they actually smell bad. As a cost saving measure, the front office has turned off the water in the clubhouse for the remainder of the season. They're hoping that Michael Lewis will take note of their radical attempt to change how the game is played. The ensuing movie will undoubtedly star Gene Hackman as the grizzled veteran manager who has to deal with the injuries, the prima donna, and the young upstarts that light a fire which lands the team in the cellar. I'd pay a nickle to watch that movie.

The Twins won this one, although it wasn't a pretty performance. Danny V stroked a blooper with the bases loaded to open the scoring in the third inning. I read that the Twins had been 0-24 this series with RISP before Danny V, and I couldn't believe the number wasn't more like 0-200. Hot Carl was a bit shaky on the mound. He finished the night pitching five and a third innings, allowing 10 hits, 3 runs (only one of which was earned) walking one, and striking out one. Both AJ Burnette and Jose Mijares pitched in tight situations during the 6th inning, but left without causing further harm. The official scorer handed out 4 holds for the Twins bullpen, with perkins the only relief pitcher allowing a run to score. Luke Hughes should have been thrown out attempting to seal second in the bottom of the 6th, but instead no one was covering the bag and the throw ended up in the outfield allowing Hughes to score. Awesome. Joe Nathan came on and pitched a perfect ninth striking out two batters, neither of which were Adam Dunn.

Culture Club: The next time you're up nort stop by the Duluth Art Institute. They've been an influence and a resource for many emerging artists from Minnesota, and the region, for more than 100 years. Their mission is to create a diverse, creative community of art makers and appreciators. Their current exhibit features a former studio mate of mine.

is there anything more exciting than a split double-header between two teams out of the running in early September?

today, my focus will be on (1) getting my First Monday book post written; and (2) grillin' (Andouille sausages and Tofurkey kielbasa sausages, pasilla peppers), making pinto beans, and chillin'.

Draft Day alert!! Don't forget the WGOM football draft is at 7 p.m. CDT today. Oh, also there's a baseball game today.

Slowey vs. Piniero

If Kevin Slowey ever wanted to get out of Gardy's doghouse, this would be his best opportunity. The Twins' bullpen was overworked yesterday when Duensing left due to an injury and the Twins have a doubleheader on Monday and are unsure of who will start in Tuesday's game, so the pitching staff is a mess right now. A complete game from Slowey would make him a hero. Eight innings would leave his manager pleased. Seven innings is almost required.

The Twins have scored19 runs in this series, which just about matched their run total from August. The last time the Twins face Piniero in this ballpark, it resulted in an 11-4 win. A win today would even the season series with the Angels, which would be ... something. GO TWINS!!!

Ho-hum. Another day, another injury.

This game went far too long, so I'll keep it short.

It's truly amazing how much injury this team has gone through. And then it seems like all the injuries seem to pile up in one part of the team. The Twins trade Delmon Young because they have too many outfielders, but suddenly Joe Mauer has to play right field. In the first part of the season, the rotation was the one part of the team that wasn't hurt much by injury, just ineffectiveness. Now the Twins have three members of the rotation on the DL and Duensing is probably headed there as well. What would a Yankee fan say if he was told that Carl Pavano was the only member of the rotation to stay healthy?

And finally, is it me or does every former Twin have like a 1.500 OPS against the Twins this year?

Of all the things I thought September would bring, runs wasn't exactly one of them. I'm not complaining, it's just that I wish they could try scoring some during games that I watch. Still, any lineup that insists on batting both Nishioka and a player with a OBP forever hovering around .300 can't complain about any runs they might score along the way.

Duensing takes on Weaver tonight. Normally, that would sound like a sure-fire loss, but Weaver's ERA has jumped up a half run since last month (still league leading at 2.28), and lately a lot more of his pitches have been turned into souvenirs (9 in his last 47 1/3 innings). Besides, Duensing was mostly watchable, and the Angels' lineup usually features at least one lefty... so...

Yeah, it's still pretty bleak.
