Last year Mauer hit .324/.404/.476 in 113 games: 75 at catcher, 29 at DH, and 8 at first. Let's assume he does similar in 2014 but with 150 games all at first.
DRS rates Mauer's defense over a full year (unsure if that's 150 or 162 games) at +2 runs; UZR says +8 runs; TZL says +7 runs. I'm going to assume +5 runs.
Extrapolating things a bit to more games, but at first, gives the following rWAR figures.
Year | G | PA | Rbat | Rbaser | Rdp | Rfield | Rpos | RAA | WAA | Rrep | RAR | WAR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2013 | 113 | 508 | 26 | -1 | 1 | 6 | 2 | 34 | 3.8 | 17 | 51 | 5.4 |
2014 | 150 | 654 | 34 | -1 | 0 | 5 | -12 | 26 | 2.9 | 22 | 48 | 5.3 |
Almost exactly the same. A large part of that is due to many more plate appearances. I don't know how much his defense will improve at first given experience. DRS really liked him this year, but UZR didn't. If instead he averages +10 runs at first, that's bordering on a six-win season.
Correia goes 7 innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7.
The Twins scored all of their runs in the 5th: Dozier went deep for the 11th time this season with 2 men on followed by Mauer's 9th HR of the year with 1 runner aboard.
The Twins scored 19 runs over the 4-game weekend series on 11 homeruns...every run came by way of the long ball. On the other hand, they were 7-62 with RISP.
After the game, Jamey Carroll to Kansas City for a PTBNL or cash considerations. In 2 seasons on the roster, Jamey hit .257/.327/.301 and saw time at 2B, SS, 3B, DH & P.
The Twins are 7-3 in their past 10 games. They hold a record of 52-63, good enough for 4th place in the AL Central (7.5 games behind KC for 3rd).
Next up - home against the Clevelanders and a chance to see if Andrew Albers can follow-up his debut gem with another solid outing.
What a beautiful day. The afternoon was spent changing out mulch around my hops and maintaining the yard. Now it's time for sitting on the deck with a couple of Alaskan Ambers and some grilled chops...
...and hopefully another Twins win.
While none of us have had a lot of recent experience seeing the Royals atop the Twins in the standings, there was a time when the more wrinkled and bent among us did. Back when pant-legs were still short and stirrup socks were long, when free agency and the designated hitter rule were busy destroying the game as we knew it, back before expansion and realignment and wild cards made a mockery of what winning a pennant was all about, and when lawns were gloriously free of trespassers, the Kansas City Royals were an elite ball club in the seven-team American League West, perennial contenders who made it to the more exclusive playoffs seven times between 1976 and 1985 and won the World Series in the final year of that stretch. (Suck on that sentence, Mr. Faulkner.) The Royals rosters back in those days were a litany of greats -- George Brett, Steve Balboni, Frank White, Hal McRae, Bret Saberhagen, Dan Quisenberry and Charlie Liebrandt to name a few. But then the team fell on hard times.
